The Georgia General Assembly convenes to begin the 1923 session facing substantial duties. England’s unions repudiate communism, with the Red forces dealt a near vital blow as the annual party conference smashes an application for membership.
A statewide meeting in Atlanta called by The Constitution aims to spur balanced farming and cooperative marketing across Georgia. Prominent speakers include Senator William J. Morris and Senator Walter F. George, with turnout expected from Turner County and numerous Georgia counties. Governor J C Walton declares martial law in Okmulgee county citing lawlessness and terror. Secretary Aldrich Blake cites signed statements from three local citizens alleging deputy abuses including detention of a minister, assault and a fatal shooting. Civil authority to be superseded, sheriff John Russell named in report.
Detroit, June 26. John L. Wintfield, a Black man, sought in Cleve Jud in the slaying of two police officers who had arrested him, was captured here late today after a month long manhunt.
Secretary Weeks ordered a survey of a potential around the world air route. Two air service officers will study landing sites on the Alaskan coast the Aleutians Japan and onward to Australia. The plan would follow the British England to Australia trail. The project remains tentative with costs and plans to be finalized after the preliminary survey report.
Trenton New Jersey June 26 Franklin Park village and surrounding countryside menaced by a forest fire. State police from Trenton and other areas along with firefighters from many sections called out. Terror-stricken residents rush from the village. Several structures burned along the fire’s path. authorities warn that without immediate aid the village may not be saved.
Calcutta reports a catastrophic collapse of two sections of an orphanage building. Thirty nine boys died and thirty three were injured in the disaster, shocking residents and authorities. The incident prompts rescue operations and investigations into safety standards at the facility.
Salt Lake City June 26 The Telegraph wires were connected inside the Mormon Tabernacle for the first time in its 61 year history to carry AP dispatches of President Harding's address. Automobiles filled the temple grounds as crowds gathered to hear him, with officials granting access for this historic telegraph installation.
New York June 26 The trench liner Paris the third vessel challenging American dry laws was deprived of excess booze today Thirteen kegs of beer were dumped overboard and several bottles of wine were taken to government warehouses The Bremen of the North German Lloyd arrived in Hoboken with medicinal brandy and officials feared a US court fine could be heavy enough to ruin them in marks at 180 000 to the dollar prompting them to avoid bringing liquor ashore
Gijon Spain June 26. Leon Meana president of the Socialist Society of Gijon was assassinated last night. The identity of the assassins is unknown.
Nat Stathan of Jochella Georgia, said to be unbalanced, escaped from his brother’s custody in Atlanta Tuesday night. A city-wide search followed as officers and a night watchman fired at him while he fled down Pine Street. He is described as about 40, 160 pounds, wearing a dark suit with a light stripe.
In Portland on June 26 Captain Paul Webber, master of the Reuse, and former first mate of the West Cayot, was honored for saving two Japanese sailors during a typhoon near Yokkaichi, Japan. He received a $2.42 check from the Yokohama Specie Bank with a formal note of thanks signed by J Inouye, treasurer of the imperial government.
Washington June 26 Attorney General Dougherty announced the appointment of Governor Thomas W Hardwick of Georgia to the legal advisory council of the Department of Justice War Frauds Division He succeeds former Senator Thomas of Colorado who resigned Earlier council members include Judges Charles Kerr and Thomas M Bigger Governor Hardwick delayed resignation and has visited Washington to prepare for his duties with the new office
Mineola, NX June 26 A test flight of C Mummert s air flivver, smaller than Georges Barbot s machine, ended in a wreck on Long Island as a heavy wind preceding an approaching storm drove the craft to the ground. Pilot L Tap Pearson suffered severe injuries after a forty foot drop and collision with the craft remains.
President Harding told Salt Lake City audiences that the federal government has reduced taxes and public debt and urged states municipalities and counties to take similar action. He said progress depends on all government units acting together and that the improving order must come from governments to which federal influence does not intrude.
In Augusta Georgia on June 26 Alford Tee aged 35 and his wife Margie Lee were buried in the same grave. Lee fatally shot her husband and then killed herself with a brain shot amid jealousy cited as the motive.
