Georgia Legislature Opens With Party Unity in New Session
The 1909 10 General Assembly convened at 10 am with Northen and Bolfenther presiding. Governor Smith’s message was read in the Senate. John B Slaton was elected Senate president and Julian McCurry president pro tem. In the House John N Holder was elected speaker and R W Hardeman speaker pro tem. Contests centered on doorkeeper and messenger posts. Holder received 161 votes. guidelines and oath ceremonies followed. Holder pledged fair, impartial rule enforcement and gratitude to colleagues. The Georgia Senate organized yesterday electing officers led by President Slaton. Gov. Smith was notified and his message read. oath taken by members, with J. Ward Jr and W. I. Burwell among late arrivals. President Slaton urged adherence to parliamentary laws and prudent fiscal policy.
Assault on Maggie McDermott Near Davis Street Power Plant
A 17 year old girl, Maggie McDermott, was attacked by a masked man near the Davis Street power plant. He choked her with a red bandanna and dragged her into bushes, before escaping. Police used bloodhounds and arrested four suspects who were released after she could not identify them.

She Kisses Children Then Kills Herself
Mrs Katherine J Baker 36 of 36 West Fourteenth street died by suicide yesterday at 11 AM by swallowing carbolic acid. Coroner’s jury ruled death by own action. She kissed her two daughters Minnie and Belle goodbye before locking her door. The tragedy occurred while living with her parents Mrs and Mrs S J Weaver. An empty vial was found beside her.

Puryear kills wife and brother in Ohio tragedy
Tennessee born William Reed Puryear, a 29 year old machinist at Ohio State University, shot his wife Clara and her brother Fred West, then killed himself in Columbus Ohio. He left notes claiming his wife had been unfaithful and that he tried to shoot in self defense. The wife survived, the brother-in-law died, and police narrowly missed harm as Puryear fired at officers.
