In Columbus South Carolina at the Southern railway shops a clash erupted at 4 am as about 125 masked strikers moved into the yard. Guard Myers fired, wounding a striker. four nonunion workers were found wounded as rioters trapped and beat them, with police and guards responding cautiously.
Pittsburg area storms caused at least four deaths including Charles Bittnor a Spring Garden farmer drowned in Spring Garden run Mosco Marcos an Italian laborer drowned in a sewer at Center and Euclid James P Dunn twelve from 15 Camp avenue Braddock drowned in Rankin floodwater Conrad Hart twelve from Duquesne killed by a live wire on a Monongahela Traction viaduct The Turtle Creek district faced renewed heavy rain with widespread damage and East Pittsburg saw Westinghouse plant submerged leaving three feet of mud and extensive losses worth hundreds of thousands
Details from Bluefel West Virginia describe a catastrophic flood in Keystone and the Elkhorn valley as waters rose at dawn and washed away two thirds of Keystone. At least sixteen north side residents died, fifty south side residents drowned, with Burke and Algoma also struck. Hundreds missing, mines ruined, and rail lines heavily damaged as 1500 workers rush to repair, while ten drownings are confirmed in Clinch valley division.
Washington June 3 Dr Johnson visited the White House with Dr Rixey to review Mrs McKinley s condition. The doctors noted a marked gain and hope to permit few shorter activities as weather allows. Removal plans for Mrs McKinley to Canton next week remain on track.
A devastating flood in the Pocahontas coal region near Elkhorn Creek inundated the basin from Ennis to Vivian Yard. Officials estimate potential loss of life near two hundred as rail lines bridges and telegraph wires are destroyed and communication is cut off west of Elkhorn. Flood waters swept away cabins coal plants and other structures, leaving only one house standing near Keystone.
Bluefield West Virginia June 2. A flood devastates the Norfolk and Western line between Bluefield and Vivian yard. Bridges wash away and 100 cars are swept from the tracks. Passengers are rescued by rope from coach windows. Families lose homes. Van Dyke family swept away with two children drowned. Telegraph and railway crews race to restore communications and lines.
Reports from Blusfeld and Keystone describe a sudden flood inciting widespread destruction. Families stranded on upper stories, numerous drownings, rail damage over a million dollars, coal and coke losses, and extensive wreckage along the Elkhorn and Tug rivers with relief efforts under way.
Roanoke reports a catastrophic flood and cloudburst sweeping Elkhorn coal region in West Virginia near Keystone. Towns devastated, railroad tracks and telegraph lines ruined, 200 workers dead in Keystone, widespread destruction across North Fork Junction and Finlan. Rail yards destroyed, numerous buildings carried away, death toll feared in hundreds.
New York June 23 Henry Fink president of the Norfolk and Western Railway was seen at his hotel about the West Virginia disaster. He cited a report from General Manager L E Johnson noting a large ice jam and about 200 people feared dead. Damage to rails and bridges on the Bluestone and North Fork branches was noted with uncertain monetary loss.
Charleston reports Secretary of State Dawson acting in Governor White’s absence to direct Bramwell authorities. National Guard units ordered to protect property as more troops and tents are readied. A relief train and supply of tents are pending rail transport from Huntington, with Bramwell to receive tents immediately.
A tornado roared through Lincoln Illinois overnight, leveling the Lincoln mattress factory and damaging the Tenness asylum for the feeble minded, Lincoln college, mills and the county poor farm. Numerous stores were unroofed, homes wrecked, and trees uprooted as rural districts reported losses.
Louisville police uncover a grisly double tragedy linked to HOS Church and the murder of Emily Stuart. Church dying with self inflicted wounds, a closet corpse identified as Mrs Stuart, 50, widow of Robert Stuart, with a love letter from New York and a Chicago note, amid a grocery business in distress.
Topeka June 22 The Democratic State Central Committee of Kansas refused Populist calls to merge into a new fusion party. J M Love chaired the meeting with 23 members present. The committee adopted a letter declining the merger and reaffirmed an independent Democratic stance. The vote signals continued fighting within Kansas politics as populists are urged to join the Democratic fold or stay apart.
