Belgium’s Flemish Question Sparks Cabinet Resignation
The Belgian cabinet resigns amid a heated Flemish versus Walloon dispute sparked by a proposal to make Ghent University Flemish. Rival leaders Franck and Huysman clashed over language policy as German occupation loomed, highlighting tensions among 8 million Belgians and Franck’s militant stance for Flemish equality.
Flemish Struggle for a Ghent University and Cultural Identity
The piece discusses the Flemish movement as a cultural effort to advance Flemish language and literature, not a political schism. It notes that many leading Flemish figures write in French, while the movement seeks a university in Ghent and resists Dutch-led consolidation, insisting on preserving Flemish culture amid Walloon tensions. The article emphasizes unity between Flemings and Walloons during the war and a hopeful, enduring national character.
