Navy authorities to reprimand Admiral Sims for his London speech on the Irish problem rather than for sentiments. The move aims to avoid Irish issue entanglement and to maintain Anglo American solidarity as Britain applauds the act.
London dispatch reports Admiral Sims defending his recent remarks as truthful and energetic. He told the American Luncheon Club in London that he will stand by what he has said and that he is pro-British, pro-French, and pro-allies. The speech drew strong applause as he avoided Irish topics and blamed garbling of portions of his address while denying any changes to his views. A House resolution labeling him an undesirable alien and barring re entry was introduced by Representative Gallivan.
Washington June 10 The bill establishing a budget system of government expenditures was signed by President Harding. He plans to appoint a director of budget within two weeks and several candidates are under consideration. A central buying board for all government purchases is also proposed by Rep Reavis of Nebraska. The joint committee will survey all departments and offices, then pursue unification and eliminations. Some reforms could be enacted quickly, others will take up to a year. Walter Brown will participate. offices likely in the Capitol.
Washington June 10 The House late today passed the Sweet bill to consolidate government agencies serving former servicemen. The measure now goes to the Senate for action.
Representative Gordon Lee of Georgia introduces a bill to authorize the Treasury to lend 200 million dollars to the Federal Farm Loan Board to meet emergency demands. The measure envisions bonds and mortgages as security and caps loan rates, aiming to bolster farm credit amid a nationwide shortage.
General Harris to address the third annual Georgia Legion convention in Columbus July 4 5 and 6. A. L. Henson invites Adjutant General Peter C. Harris who has accepted the invitation and will discuss preparedness from a military angle. He is a Georgian and will be away from his duties for several days.
George White of the Democratic National Committee met Woodrow Wilson at his 8 street home and spent an hour discussing general political matters and public affairs. White said Wilson remains keenly interested, militant in spirit, and united with Democrats while avoiding details on his health. He traveled from Marietta, Ohio, noting Republican promises failed to deliver and a revival of Democratic spirit nationwide.
Harold R Young of the National Retail Dry Goods Association spoke to Atlanta merchants in a Chamber of Commerce dining room about a turnover tax. He argued the sales tax is more equitable, simpler, and better for both merchants and consumers than bills before Congress, and urged careful study and broad publicity. The group will not act immediately pending comprehensive plans to inform Georgia citizens.
Washington reports that 100 Georgia Republicans will be invited to reorganize the state party in Atlanta on July 9. Invitations to be issued around June 25. The group will include business leaders and nonoffice seekers to ensure white leadership and factional unity. federal appointments will wait until after the meeting.
Nashville Tennessee June 10 Dr James Vance state chairman for the Chinese relief campaign announced the discontinuance after a telegram from Thomas W Lamont reported large contributions and drastic famine district changes.
Dallas Texas June 10 Dr J B Gambrell retired president of the Southern Baptist convention died at the home of a daughter in Dallas. He was 79 and had been ill since February. A noted southern educator he taught at several Baptist theological schools and was longtime editor of the Baptist Standard. He is survived by two sons and three daughters.
Mrs Price-Smith accuses Mayor Key of reversing stance on police reorganization and vetoing commission recommendations. She demands a legal ruling from City Attorney Mason and notes Key’s past calls for a fair, thorough investigation. The inquiry continues under council scrutiny.
Georgia high school scholars have four days to submit government good roads essays, capped at 500 words. Winners receive a four year university scholarship funded by H. S. Firestone, plus up to 100 in prizes from The Constitution. Essays will be judged by a five member panel including M. L. Grittain and W. R. Neo, selecting top entries to Washington.
The Atlanta board of education adjourned amid a clash over teachers with Miss Julia Riordan losing her bid for re election as Davis Street principal. The vote to replace Riordan went to Miss Sarah Tuck who was elected four to three, as Miss Campbell's resignation was accepted and several other principals faced renewed scrutiny. A secret session had targeted removals including Miss Bo Smith and Miss Nell Gating, with threats to cut pay if funds run short.
Athens reports the steamship Bouboulina struck a mine and foundered in the Aegean with about 240 passengers and a crew of 25 aboard. The Greek battleship Lemnos has reached Piraeus with two survivors or passengers. Details of the disaster are being sought from Paris. The vessel was formerly Coronifica, built in 1878 at Newcastle.
Washington June 10 officials outlined for the first time since the new board members were named a program to run the Shipping Board on a strict business basis. A. D. Lasker of Chicago was cited as chairman and officials stressed cooperation with commercial interests to halt the supposed paralysis of American shipping. The plan would charge the government’s war costs to the board and reduce losses from the war era.
