Cotton Market News Signs Mixed as Prices Slide
New York June 7 The cotton market opened steady up 1 to 1 1/2 points and gained on old crop futures while new crop stayed muted due to favorable weather. Early trading saw July near 16.30 and August 14.66 before a late New Orleans and southern selling pushed old crop down to last night’s close and new crop to about 11 points net loss. Rallies followed on renewed cover and support as Liverpool buyers and firm cables helped lift prices, with southern spot markets steady to 3% higher. Receipts at ports totaled 5,065 bales, week tallies show declines from last year. Spot closed quiet: middling uplands 16.40, middling gulf 15.45.
