Washington June 6 a long White House conference produced a complete agreement between the government and Western Trunk Line Association railroads The 24 defendants agreed to withdraw rate increases effective June 1 and to file no new increases until the new railroad bill becomes law Taft said the injunctions suit had accomplished its aim and would be discontinued once the law is signed A conference with eastern and central railroads is planned for tomorrow to secure their acquiescence and suspend future increases until the act becomes effective The aim is to empower the Interstate Commerce Commission to judge rate increases for justness and to grant railroads a square deal while letting them resume improvements and expansions if needed Continued on Page Two.
James L. Terry, once a prominent Atlantan long resident in Longview Texas, is officially recorded as dead in Atlanta for over fifty years. He seeks to correct the error and resume his place as an active citizen and former Alderman, with a note that he was a leading figure in Atlanta before moving.
Reports from Merida and Valladolid describe a major Maya uprising in Yucatan with 40 killed in Merida and 5,000 insurgents sacking Valladolid killing government officials and police chiefs. Rail line cut, telegraph cut, and several towns attacked as authorities investigate causes linked to land grievances.
Delegates from every state and territory gathered in St Louis for the annual American Medical Association convention opening tomorrow. Subjects include the bookworm and pellagra. Allied associations begin sessions, with Col. William C. Gorgas arriving for the house of delegates meeting. Dr William H Welch installed as the new president.
In a 14 to 10 vote the general council rejected a resolution to raise council members salaries from 25 to 60 dollars monthly. Bankers from many states arrive for a first meeting to be held at the New Kimball hotel in the Gate City. The group will be entertained throughout their stay with a full schedule of events and visits designed to showcase city offerings and hospitality.
Chairman Frank Hawkins of the entertainment committee requests that all automobiles tendered for the delegates ride over the city this afternoon be sent to the Pryor street entrance of the New Kimball promptly at 4 o'clock. He also asks that any other owners who have not tendered their autos and wish to do so read their cars at that time.
Bankers from Georgia and neighboring states convene at the New Kimball ballroom at 9:80 am for a two day Georgia Bankers Association session. The Atlanta Clearing House Association coordinates hospitality led by Frank Hawkins with J T Orme and J K Ottley. An extensive program features banking experts and a strong social itinerary including an automobile tour and a reception at Mayor Maddoxs home.
Greenville, S C June 6. An unidentified white man riding Southern train No 6 attempted to jump from a car window near Toccoa Ga. A negro Pullman porter grabbed him by the feet as the man dangled. The impact against the rock cut walls proved fatal for the jumper and the porter was injured. The body was taken to Toccoa for identification and burial arrangements.
President Theodore Roosevelt speaks at a London journalists supper in Stationers Hall noting his famous “big stick” phrase. He urges reporters to wield “soft words” over force as Anglo-American relations improve and both nations grow more confident and interconnected.
Chicago June convention notes members of the Professional Teachers of Dancing showcasing the aviation dance or airship glide. Lecturers claim it will outpace the waltz and two step as dancers glide rather than hop, with no skipping or hopping and a sensation of not touching the floor. The new style, though requiring practice, is described as cooler and more pleasing.
Des Moines July 6 The Taft administration faces a pivotal Iowa primary as Democrats and Republicans set contests across eleven congressional districts. Key battles focus on Carrell versus Garst for governor with up to 160000 votes, while progressive and standpat factions clash in several districts and the 10th district features Woods versus Yasne after Taft declined to reappoint the Emmetsburg postmaster.
Charles R Heike of the American Sugar Refining Co testified most of the day denying knowledge of sugar underweights and any wrongdoing at docks or the Williambore refinery. Chester Woodward of Narcasy Trust Co said Oliver Spitzer, a former dock supervisor now aiding prosecutors, deposited 106457 in 1907.
Chicago June 8 Charging that it has been defrauded of about $3 600 000 on repair work in a period of four years the Illinois Central Railroad Company filed suit for an accounting against four of its former officials in the circuit court here today The railroad companys bill named Orlando Keith Joseph P Baker William Renshaw John M Taylor Prefied By Overcharges In connection with these charges made against Its former officials the Illinois Central road claims in its bill that these concerns profited in alleged overcharges on car repair work in the following amounts The Blue Island Equipment Company 400 000 the American Car and Equipment Company 100 000 Renterman Manufacturing Company 750 000 the Memphis Car Company 300 000 International Car Company alleged Profits not stated In addition to the suit filed against the four former department heads the railroad company filed suit for an accounting against the West Pullman Car Company and against the American Car and Equipment Company These suits were also filed in the circuit court here The filing of the suits follows months of investigation by the railroad company and numerous rumors of an alleged graft ring in the Illinois Central Railroad Madriz Moves on Greytown Washington June 8 President Madriz is dispatching reinforcements ammunition mules and as equipment to Greytown according to information received at the state department from Conan Oliverca at Managua
