Oraduna Attack Deepens U S German Strain

Washington reports the British steamer Orduna carrying Americans was attacked by a German submarine. If initial torpedoing without warning is confirmed by official inquiry, U S officials say the incident will deepen the already tense U S Germany relations and force Cabinet debate on submarine policy and American safety at sea. Twenty-two Americans aboard the Cunard liner Orduna report a near miss when a German submarine fired a torpedo ten feet from the rudder off the Irish coast. The ship sped away as shells rained, pursued briefly, then escaped as help began to arrive. An American protest is planned by William Thompson, urging U.S. government action after the attack.

Frank seeks pardon for assailant after wounding

Milledgeville Ga July 17 Leo M Frank, wounded in an attack at the prison farm, told doctors he was at peace with God and ready to die if fate allows. He expressed forgiveness for his assailant and hoped for pardon. His wife fainted at news of the assault but recovered.

71 Passengers Saved as Arizona Grounded in Fog

Seventy one passengers of the Goodrich line steamer Arizona were saved when the ship grounded near the northeast entrance to Little Traverse Bay Michigan. Passengers were transferred to other vessels after theArizona struck a long mid bar in dense fog. Captain Fowler, master, reported proceeding slowly in the fog and there was no excitement aboard.

Prisoner Attacks Frank at Milledgeville Prison Farm

Leo M. Frank, serving life for Mary Phagan's murder, was attacked in his dormitory by fellow inmate William Creen who severed his jugular vein with a file knife. Doctors sewed the wound. Frank remains conscious though critical and at risk of blood poisoning. Creen confessed, is confined, and says he is sorry.
