Washington July 17 The Southern Railway Company approves purchases of fifty locomotives seventy five passenger coaches four dining cars six combination mail and baggage cars six cabooses and two hundred new coaches to meet current and future needs lighter locomotives will be used on secondary lines Emeline Davis of Columban Ga reports the decision.

Ship Alleghany Burns Off Tyree near Tybee Island

The steamship Allegheny bound from Savannah to Philadelphia caught fire two miles from Tybee Island. All thirty two passengers and crew were saved, but cargo and baggage were destroyed. the vessel drifted toward the beach before burning out. Captain Freeman and officers abandoned last as the hull burned. salvage was limited to a few suitcases. Built in 1881 at Cramps Shipyards, Philadelphia.

Trial reveals dairyman Darby linked to lethal tiphoid outbreak

Testimony in Birmingham Alabama on July 17 shows dairyman N Darby charged with selling milk injurious to public health. A physician testified that 24 of 30 abdominal fever cases in the infected South Highland district traced to Darby’s Glen Irig cows. City bacteriologist Duncan reported milk bacteria counts far above the permissible 50,000 per cubic centimeter, with samples at 6,600,000 2,320,000 and 29,920,600 respectively. Authorities say the fever is largely under control though tracing the exact source continues.
