Price of Cotton Falls Sharply in New Orleans Trade

New Orleans July 11 The price of cotton fell sharply this week with most trading months at their lowest since last week’s close. Liquidation of long positions and heavy short selling drove prices down 63 10 to 79 points. Better interior weather and lack of export demand hurt sentiment while short covering and occasional buying near week end limited losses. Export prospects and upcoming crop picking weigh on futures as traders eye cabinet developments and potential policy shifts.

Industrial Lines Report Sees Trade Rebound and War-driven Gains

Bradstreet's survey notes irregular distributive trade contrasts with expanding industrial activity. Hire labor absorbs, war orders rise, bank clearings improve, and crop prospects brighten. Jobbing trade slows in cold spots while forward orders grow where war orders or good crops boost confidence. Overall, industrial output expands with falling idle machinery and rising pig iron, iron and steel demand, and robust textile and footwear sectors signaling sustained summer activity.

Germany's reply affects market in July trading mood

New York reports that relations with Germany calm, aiding a tentative market upturn led by J. P. Morgan's recovery. Disclosures after an attempted assault on the financier, bomb threats to cargo ships, and early foreign dilution dampen sentiment. Demand for American war goods boosts sectors like steel, while exchange-rate weakness strains American debtors. A French 20 million credit uses bank acceptances, hinting at scarce new US securities. Missouri Pacific reorganisation and St Paul dividend drop signal broader market recalibration.
