Freak Ear of Corn Puzzles University College Professors
Athens July 10 Special Professors of biology and plant breeding at the University and State College of Agriculture study a freak ear of corn found near Judge Hamilton McWhorter's field. The central ear bears normal grains while sixteen smaller ears grow from the stalk base with diverse grains, including wheat, rye, and oats, suggesting pollination by bees. Nearby patches of wheat oats and rye accompany the discovery.
