Why the Possum Has No Hair on His Tail
A colorful late 19th or early 20th century regional piece blends folkloric humor with origins of racial caricature. It cites Captain John Smith and Irwin Russell, links a Mississippi tale to literature, and centers on a banjo tale from Booker, weaving a humorous origin of the possum’s hairless tail amid a Noah’s Ark riff and plantation song tradition. The verbose dialect portrays enslaved and Black vernacular, ending with a punchline that heritage lies in the banjo and possum tale rather than hair.
