In Washington on January 28 the Senate rejected perks for the president and House speaker, approving a 190000 salary for the president with no perquisites. Chief Justice to earn 16000 and associate justices 14500. the vote was 35 to 30 with Republicans mostly opposing and no Democrats favoring the increase. Oregon legislators faced a party split over electing Democrat Governor Chamberlain to the U.S. Senate despite pledges from many members. The house voted 34 to 14 for Chamberlain with Fulton 12 and Cake 14. the senate tally was 19 to 7 to 3 and 1 for allies, amid lobbying and claims of external influence.

Baltimore January 13 Mandie De Gracia known as The Diamond Queen pleaded guilty to stealing a diamond pin from a Hotel Helvedere guest and was sentenced to 48 months in jail. She was employed as a housekeeper at the hotel at the time of the theft.
Governor T. M. Campbell began a second term in Austin and urged lawmakers to ignore lobbyists who he said represent corporate interests. He called for Taft to visit but warned he would not rush to invite outside influence. The inaugural address focused on reducing influence of the so called Third House at the Texas Capitol.
Chicago January 18 John D Rockefeller was given another one million dollars to the University of Chicago. His total contributions to the university aggregate about twenty four million nine hundred thousand dollars for endowment and other purposes.
