Governor Haskell claims Hearst associate Mac Reynolds traveled to Oklahoma to assemble false statements for data to defame him. Reynolds was arrested on a conspiracy warrant. his hotel rooms were searched and papers seized, including materials tied to a $600,000 suit. Haskell alleges broader outside influence urging bribes to craft truthless claims.
In the Texas House this afternoon the sergeant at arms was sent into the galleries to restore order during a heated debate on the prohibition submission amendment. Opponents of the measure, led by Representative Purhugh of Tarrant county, faced interruptions as they argued against the amendment. A vote counted 44 anti's to 1 proponent, with 69 votes needed to pass. further voting was not expected that day.
Washington January 48 Definite committee action was taken tonight by the house insurgents in their fight over the existing rules of the lower branch. In a caucus with twenty four members two principles were agreed upon first that the house and not the speaker should select all committees including the committee on rules and that there should be a call of the committees at least one day a week.
In Hamilton Ohio Judge Murphy sentenced Buck Cottongame to life in the penitentiary for the murder of Arnet. The killer claimed to wreck the home of Arnet, the man who died in the courtroom when the verdict was read. Cottongame, tied to a noted Kentucky feud family, faces life imprisonment.
The U S Supreme Court sustains a Texas court verdict against Watera-Pierce Oil Co of St Louis, fining 1 623 300 and ousting it from Texas for violating the state anti trust law by a daily rate from May 31 1900. The case centers on due process and interstate commerce questions framed as a writ of error from a Texas district court. Details continue on page four.
