Constitution Implies Optimism For 1909 South Prospects
The Constitution notes a shift to optimism in 1909 with Bradstreet’s Southeast report. It cites easing political agitation, improved business confidence, and planned developments such as interurban electric lines, water power, and cotton mill activity. It predicts the South will diversify crops, expand industry, and surpass prior records as prosperity returns.

Loss of weight standards hurts farmers and consumers
In a letter to the Constitution editor, Beazley Gledstone argues that mis graded and uncertified scales cause large losses to farmers from short weights and to consumers. He recalls weighing ten sacks that should total a ton but weighed 1,786 pounds, an over 18 percent discrepancy, and notes lack of official test standards. He warns the country risks widespread shortages and calls for annual consumer protections. He references England's William E. Sledstone and contends the issue demands firm standardization and enforcement.
