In Washington on February 19 the Senate debated linking the Panama canal treaty with the statehood bill. Senator Morgan opposed the treaty, while Senator Quay urged delaying proceedings by reading the Colombian constitution. The chamber saw a partisan clash over procedure with Morgan continuing his speech after a brief adjournment.
Rome reports the pope marks twenty five years since election with a high mass in St. Peter's Basilica led by Cardinal Rampolla. An explosion in the naval magazines at Fort Lafayette New York bay around 2 PM killed four men and seriously injured at least seven. Names of the dead include George Ratham Gustav Dozier John Mason and Frank Munden among others. Cause disputed with theories about firing a shell or removing a powder charge. In New Decatur, Alaska, February 19, Maggie Scarff an 18 year old mountain girl was killed by her lover William Jones who then shot her brother John Scarff who was wounded. Jones then killed himself. The scene was a mountain road above Clear Creek falls. Maggie had a long relationship with Jones. a stranger sighting prompted Jones to confront them. Jones fired twice, killing Maggie and injuring John. a misstep led Jones to shoot himself. John Scarff, previously employed in Shelbyville, Indiana, had just returned home from Georgia.
