London February 18 The second trial of the British second class cruisers Hyacinth and Minerva with water tube and cylindrical boilers ends in defeat for the water tube system. Minerva and Hyacinth carried equal coal to Gibraltar then re coal and race homeward. Minerva reaches Portsmouth at 1 AM February 15 averaging 18 knots while Hyacinth's boilers break down in the Bay of Biscay Monday.
Colonel Jose L. Cristo, retired, died tonight in Monterey Mexico at age 40 after several months of illness from throat cancer. He was once a prominent figure in the army and service.
In Jackson Mississippi urgent report states condemned murderer Joe Campbell, with noose readied, received a last minute reprieve from Governor Longe, allowing Sheriff Wilson to halt executions. Campbell then whispered the name of his accomplice, triggering suspension of the death sentence and delaying the hangings.
Washington February 18 Justice Shiras of the United States Supreme Court today presented his resignation to take effect February 24. Former Secretary of State William R Day of Ohio has been selected as his successor.
February 18 in New Orleans Eva Atkins dies from morphine poisoning after a joint suicide attempt with Folger Green in a Bourbon Street hotel room. Green stabbed and slashed wrists, then drank cocktails while awaiting action. Note asks Miss Atkins to be notified, Green a native of the city.
Captain Pershing was consecrated by Moro leaders as a datto at Bayan in Mindanao. After the rite, Moros welcomed peace efforts and U.S. forces raised the flag at Bayan forts. Pershing’s batteries fired salutes with shrapnel shells, which impressed the Moros.
February 1 in Chicago, John A Nordgren faces trial for murdering his wife by poisoning. A key exhibit is the heart of Mrs. Nordgren stored in a bottle on the table near the defendant, who showed visible emotion during proceedings.
Indianapolis reports William H. Vermillion, 1 man from Newark Ohio, held without bond after his wife and two children ingested poisoned candy. The wife says he twice attempted to poison her, and yesterday he gave the three year old a bag with gum drops intended for her. The neighborhood girl ate the gum drops and became ill. two physicians attend the child and girl.
In Brazil Indiana six theatrical wolves escaped during shipment after a performance. They frightened schoolchildren and wandered through town invading chicken houses as a keeper and posse pursued them through the morning.

The governor’s inquiry led to the reprieve, Campbell’s joy when the cap was removed and he was sent back to jail. The other three executions proceeded.
