Helpless steamers driven ashore in winter storm
Norfolk Virginia, February 18. A blinding northeast snowstorm drove two steamers ashore near Cape Charles and Cape Henry. The Katherine Park, a British steamer, stranded near Smith Island while an unknown tramp hit the beach by Cape Henry. Lifesavers assisted the Katherine Park crew, the captain preferring to risk floating the ship. The other vessel remained stranded as authorities ordered the Onondaga and Merritt Chapman wrecking outfits to assist. The storm raged along the South Atlantic, with snow, sleet, and freezing temperatures across North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, forecasters predicting continued cold and possible rain.
