Atlanta Police Under Fire in Official Probe Contends Lawsuits Loom
In a tense Atlanta council meeting the police department faced broad accusations of corruption from an accuser with mayoral backing. Commissioner Johnson proposed a committee to press the lawyer for evidence while Chief Beavers denied any foundation and vowed to clear the department, asserting the charges aim to discredit administration after the tenderloin reform. The panel, led by Johnson Garner and Verney, will follow up with Crane and note his readiness to present further witnesses. The report notes Brannen and Bayne, long-serving turnkeys, defend their records against slander claims amid ongoing discussions and potential investigations.
