New York Feb 7 A telegraphic dispatch from San Francisco reports President Roosevelt praising Speaker Tant. Roosevelt criticizes Perkins’ conduct over years hampering naval policy and now urging what he calls a reckless approach. Roosevelt offers no direct advice but promises to assist if possible.
Washington February 7 Senator Newlands called for broad national legislation covering the entire Japanese question. He warned against relying on western state measures, arguing such action could violate treaties with Japan and mislead eastern states about economic and social dangers. He urged a federal approach and proposed Nevada adopt resolutions asserting race concerns demand national policy, cooperation with Southern states, and measures to reduce race tensions amid a global context. For Associated Charities Atlanta reports a rapid rise from 800 to 1,868 members in two weeks. Led by the Order of Old Fashioned Women, with pastor and ministerial support, the drive aims to reach 2,000 by campaign end. Cards, church pledges, and $5 yearly dues expected to swell the roll as more Atlantans are drawn to the cause.
At Armour Fertiliser Works near Ferchtree Bridge two county officers confronted seven armed negros as they played cards in a boarding house room. After a knife slash opened Butler’s sleeve and a pistol grab sparked a shootout, Henry Sherwood, 25, was killed in a final exchange. Walters returned fire as the fight spilled to a window and door, with one other assailant fleeing and others at large. Coroner’s jury ruled self defense.
In Baltimore on Sunday February 7 manager Bernbard Wirieh of the Lyric staged a paid concert at a private house. Police allowed it but named several attendees for grand jury action. The event occurred without the required police permit and officials say Sunday paid concerts are prohibited without a permit.
Cardinal Gibbons travels from Baltimore on a visit to New Orleans to see his brother and attend a dinner in honor of President Taft, delivering an instruction.
New York February 7 The British steamer Bhima will sail with about 6000 Chinese bodies bound for burial in China. Bodies gathered from across the United States are placed in coffins and shipped through a society that arranges for return to the Flowery Kingdom. This marks seven years since the last such voyage from New York.
Seven white prisoners slipped from a second floor window after removing two bars. Three were recaptured, one wounded. Four remained at large: Charles Hubbard, Walter Cltne, B. J. Bankston, and Ed Sarlow. Night Watchman Rewe and officers pursued. bloodhounds likely to be used.
New York February 7 News reaches theatre circles that veteran actor Denman Thompson of The Old Homestead is dangerously ill with pneumonia at his West Swanzey New Hampshire home. He is 76, and relatives are rushing to his bedside.
Oscar Miller, a prominent local man in Douglasville Georgia, shot his brother-in-law Marvin Winn near the town, following a dispute over consuming more whisky while Miller was intoxicated. Winn was wounded in two shots. Miller was jailed awaiting preliminary trial next day.
Savannah Ga February 7 Specls Enrough whisky to keep Savan nah's throats wet for a month and more to attack several up-to-date Barrooms is stored in an unused building on the police Grounds. It is estimated 20000 gallons of whisky plus beer and other liquors fill the place, with officials debating disposal options. Mayor Freder says the city has not decided how to get rid of it.
Archbishop Farley at St Patrick's Cathedral today laments modern stage morality, saying bad example corrupts the young. He cites men and women in public venues bringing youths to obscene orgies and warns of pagan-like influences.
Alexandria La February 7 News reached here today of a fatal duel at Hindion ten miles north of Alexandria between the Barrington father and son and the Weatherford brothers. Both Barringtons died and Robert Weatherford was mortally wounded. The quarrel arose after Bud Barrington killed Weatherford’s dog. In Marler's store the Weatherfords confronted the Barringtons and a shotgun and pistols were drawn. Charles Weatherford seized the shotgun while Barrington Sr attacked Robert Weatherford. Shotfire followed with the Barringtons killed and Robert Weatherford mortally wounded. Charles Weatherford surrendered to Deputy Sheriff Crewsford at Hinston.
In Houston Mississippi February 7 a mob of 800 rounded up Baskin a 18 year old black man and arrested him for ordering the death of Rev Dr W T Hudson whose body was found Saturday submerged about two miles from Houston A secret meeting followed with hopes for lynching Baskin until the coroner's verdict is given. Governor Noel offered a reward for the arrest of the murderer and remains were sent to Memphis for interment.
New Orleans on February 7 reports widespread consternation as word spreads that the incoming president will visit via Panama and stop in the city for two days. Citizens form dozens of committees to plan land and river receptions parades invitations hotels and banquet arrangements for the distinguished guest.
Washington forecast for Monday and Tuesday calls for increasing cloudiness and warmer in the north, with rain possible in western portions. Virginia to see partly cloudy conditions turning cloudy with northerly winds, North Carolina warmer then rain in the west, Florida and South Carolina turning partly cloudy then warmer, with variable winds. Texas regions show a mix of clouds, rain, and colder conditions by Tuesday, while Mississippi and Kentucky expect rain or showers with cooler air advancing from the west.
