News from Zacatecas reports a disastrous blaze in the city market building where cellars and refrigerating rooms stocked with goods collapsed. Firefighters and bystanders worked to save the structure as flames spread and the roof caved in burying several men under the wreckage. casualties are as yet unconfirmed, with bodies reportedly recovered from the ruins.
A four story sweat shop building on a York street caught fire on December 2. Isaac Gill an 18 year old and another unidentified man escaped by jumping from windows. Four people were injured but not fatally. The blaze forced workers to flee through windows and caused significant losses estimated at 310.
In Central City a father Lafferty shot his son Burt Lafferty during a long running family dispute. The weapon, a shotgun, wounded Burt and a daughter was hit by flying debris. The father was captured and jailed as officers say he claimed the visit was to heal old differences. The son is believed fatally injured though conditions are not yet confirmed.
A rear end collision near Suamico Wisconsin on December 22 left Louis Dé Laria and Louis Gilmette dead after a fire engulfed the wreckage. Con J Burney and others were injured as families traveled from Green Bay. Investigators ruled the fire and outcome of the crash as determined.
December 22 in Arkansas a dispute led to a shooting. Charles, a city keeper, killed James Garner instantly and mortally wounded his brother William Garner, who died that night. The shooter turned himself in after the incident at his home. Authorities prepared the remains for burial as plans were made for services.
Reports from Buenos Aires and Valparaiso describe Argentina recalling its minister to Chile and crowding citizens to arms with a Mauser limit of thirty five rounds. Chilean minister Portela to depart for Buenos Aires as negotiations continue possibly via Secretary Blancas. The Times notes U.S. or British input could help peace. a Valparaiso proclamation calls for another volunteer contingent. Also a four story Reynolds block fire in Utica, causing heavy damage and one firefighter injured.
Berlin reports stated the German government is preparing for military action to settle German claims with Venezuela. An ultimatum to Venezuela threatening force has been mentioned. The American battleship Indiana departed for La Guayra, Venezuela, with the Moltke training ship present. Washington noted no orders yet for the Indiana to proceed, amid Venezuela's internal rebellion and ongoing U.S. monitoring of events.
Surgeons report General R. A. Alger, former secretary of war, underwent gall bladder operation for infection from gall stones. He rallied, temperature normal, pulse 74, serious but improving. doctors say recovery chances are fair. Operation opened and drained the gall bladder to remove infection.

In Ludington Michigan a Pere Marquette ferry boat No 16 ran aground during a heavy southerly gale entering the harbor. The ship’s main steam pipe broke and many crew were injured or scalded while thirty three men were rescued by breeches buoy. Vessel and cargo valued at 200000 and fully insured.
The Argentine government has suspended negotiations with Chile and will submit the dispute to arbitration by King Edward VII of England. Foreign Minister Alcorta reported that all diplomatic efforts this year failed and both governments seek an honorable solution under royal mediation.
Springfield December 22 Governor Crane remains reticent when asked about Roosevelt's tender for the secretaryship. The governor has not spoken publicly and details are pending. A special messenger was sent from Dalton with Crane's decision, expected to reach Washington Monday.
Justice David McAdam of the New York Supreme Court died in New York at 63 from tongue cancer after a relapse following surgical removal of the growth. He leaves a widow and four sons. Jeffersonville Indiana December 22 The jury in the case of Newell Rathbun charged with the murder of Charles Goodman did not reach a verdict after being instructed at midnight Saturday They reported at 9 this morning that they could not agree and Judge Marsh ordered them to retire and report again tomorrow morning if a verdict is possible
President Loubet unveiled a statue honoring Baudin and the barricade defenders of December 3 1841 in the Faubourg St Antoine amid nationalist and socialist clashes. Dausset's speech was delayed by police and socialists jeered while nationalists sang the Carmagnole. Several arrests followed, then releases.

New York December 22. President Preston of the American Hoop Company reports serious injuries after a motor car crash late Saturday. The vehicle, driven by a chauffeur, toppled at Yonkers northern city line while traveling at high speed. Occupants were removed by ambulance and taken to St Johns Hospital, where hospital staff offered no information.
In St Louis on December 22 John J. Ryan a prominent local politician was shot at a city corner and seriously wounded the bullet entering the left abdomen. The attack is believed to stem from a long running political feud in a contested ward. Senator William J. Sewell in Camden shows slight improvement and can take nourishment.
Noblesville Ind December 22 John Seay a miller employed by Noblesville Mining Company was murdered early today while seated on a stairway near a window an unknown assailant fired a shotgun blast through the glass wounding him fatally and escaping. William Fodrea reports suspected motive and details remain unclear.

Dubois Pa December 22 word comes of a massive blaze about 3 miles from Summerville in Jefferson county that destroyed John Ashbaughs farmhouse. Four were burned to death and several others seriously burned with one seriously injured. the husband and father Mrs Ashbaugh among the injured. Names listed include William Ashbaugh 22 Mabel Ashbaugh daughter Harry Ashbaugh son and James Ashbaugh. Herman unknown age injured with doubtful recovery.
Chicago lawyer Alexander Sullivan was convicted of conspiracy to aid a fugitive in a bribery scandal linked to jurors. A $2000 fine was imposed, no prison term. Judge Abner Smith will rule on Sullivan’s motion for a new trial tomorrow as other defendants face separate trials.
In Butte a Missoula report says Lieutenant Governor Higgins his brother Arthur Higgins and game warden were acquitted on third degree assault charges brought by Theo Blockley. The trial featured tension as the plaintiff referenced Mrs Higgins provoking a heated exchange in court.
