Atlanta's school board advances two new projects tied to a 1.8 million bond plan. A vacation school and a reclassification of grammar schools aim to reach more children with central intermediate centers and smaller primary schools.
Washington December 16 Eulogies on the life and public career of Senator A O Bacon will be paid in the senate tomorrow by colleagues who knew and admired him He served for years in framing laws for the nation Senators Lodge O Gorman Stone Gallin Nelson Talman and others will pay tribute No Bacon family members are expected but a memorial volume will be made from the speeches for hundreds of friends
Washington reports the House Commerce Committee examined limits on how long food products may be kept in cold storage. Dr H D Pease testified a turkey can remain desirable if government inspectors approve before and after storage, while others urged limitations on non frozen items. Dr W J Gies suggested fish can be stored almost indefinitely if frozen properly, and Charles Droste said butter and eggs cannot be kept in cold storage for more than nine months.

The First Baptist church announced a peaceful resolution to the locker club dispute after a board of deacons meeting on March 18 1914. Deacons who held club memberships will work to remove unlawful features and sever ties if reforms fail. Pastor Dr Charles W Daniel praised the amicable understanding and said he hopes this ends further appearances on the issue.
In Calhoun Georgia a seven year old girl, daughter of Mi ana Mrs. Jackson Padgett, died after her dress caught fire while left alone at home. The mother was away briefly and heard the screams as the child ran a short distance before collapsing. Two others were seriously burned in nearby days. Forsyth Georgia a Resigio Tift college student Annie Strickland was badly burned when her clothing ignited near an open grate in a college cottage. Helpers extinguished the flames, she received medical care and rests easily.
London reports the official press bureau and censor office will take a holiday from 2 p.m. December 24 to 9 p.m. Christmas Day during which period no news will be passed for transmission.
The board of police commissioners held a lengthy, decorous discussion on where a policeman should drink. Patrolman E J Callaway, accused of drunkenness, admitted one drink off duty at a Marietta street bar rear. The board split over suspension, with a 10 day penalty favored by most and 30 days with discharge backed by some.
Atlanta public schools will close December 24 and remain closed through Christmas and New Year to January 4, per the school board finance committee. Some members favored longer closure, but teachers argued delays in learning after Thanksgiving. The committee denied a separate negro school at Fort McPherson, but added a teacher at Wien in school for forty nearby negro children. An appropriation of 300 dollars will be asked January for physiology equipment at the high schools. The 1915 budget will be prepared by Superintendent Slaton and Secretary Landrum, with a meeting next Wednesday. The committee authorized suspending Carl Wood until he pays desk damage, created a journeyman plumber position to maintain school equipment, and hired two additional carpenters.
In Washington December 16 Edward T. Brown federal reserve agent argued the Atlanta bank justifies its existence and meets business needs. He opposed further discount rate cuts below 5 percent for short term paper urged by Senator Hoke Smith. Brown warned rate cuts would prompt local banks to move obligations to New York. He noted rediscounting 375,000 of paper and said a higher rate protects funding and lowers money costs for the public. Smith contends the bank is too high and restricts loans by reserve requirements.
A Daily Express dispatch from Hartlepool reports German fleet mines to deter pursuit as German cruisers attacked the English east coast. Berlin confirms parts of the high seas fleet bombarded Scarborough and Hartlepool on the sixteenth morning with coast fortifications attacked. The raid marks a rare foreign squadron striking England, driving the fleet southward in fog toward the coast.
