Navy commander warns canal defense may need a large mobile army
Washington December 15 Prepar edness of the United States to defend the Panama canal was the subject of a House naval committee hearing with Commander Stirling of the Atlantic fleet submarine flotilla. He said naval forces alone may not suffice and a large mobile army would be required to keep the canal open. He noted the nearest foreign base is Jamaica and that both coasts would be safe if the canal remains open for the fleet. The submarine chief foresees battleships remaining key, but predicts faster, more offensive ships and 2 000 ton sea going subs of 25 knots to accompany battleships.
