Roosevelt directed the fleet through blue water zones, turning aside to review the great ships as guns roared. The scene highlighted his steady command and the naval power on display during formal reviews.
A Washington dispatch reports sixteen steel belted battleships sail from Point Comfort under President Roosevelt aboard the Mayflower for a 14 000 mile voyage to the Golden Gate. The fleet, modern in design, will pass near Charleston and is described as the most mobile and self reliant line ever gathered. The president greeted officers aboard the Mayflower and praised the naval display as a detail of naval training. Continued on Page Three.
Yolande Ala December 1. A mine blast at Yolande Cost and Coke Company No 1 near Yolande drew a death toll estimate from forty to sixty six. Rescue work faced debris and crowds as officials, miners, and inspectors coordinated entry into the affected mine passages.
Central blocked entry over West Point months ago, a key to the situation. Atlanta, Birmingham and Atlantic faces choice of using Terminal station or union depot, or building a new depot. No official comment, while railmen discuss strategies and potential disruptions to the West Point line.
Charles A Smith president of the state Baptist convention and Furman University trustee, was removed from his Timmonsville home tonight to Baltimore for an appendicitis operation. A postoffice robbery in New Iberia involved stolen stamps and registered mail. Yolande Coal Company, led by Dr. C B Crowe of Birmingham, operates mines south of Birmingham with Union opposition and a village noted for its painted white houses.
A fire truck from engine house No 2 struck Chief Jentzens buggy and Dr W C Estes automobile in front of City Hall at East Hunter and Pryor streets. The horse was frightened and uprooted the lamp post, scattering dirt on the sidewalk. Dr Estes and his sons were in the car and escaped injury as the large truck veered after collision. The incident demolished the lamp post and damaged harnesses and the buggy.
The city council elected new water board members F F P Ric, F G Lake, and W S Duncan to fill expired terms. Wn EE Dunn and F G Lake were chosen for the water board with Dunn praised for park board service. A bid for the board of health elected M A Erskine over J R Smith, with Erskine described as a progressive and popular young man.
In Monroe and Tremont La a wave of violence erupts as Italian workers are killed or robbed by Black laborers amid attempts to replace them in lumber camps. Twenty six foreigners robbed, two Italians killed, several wounded. mob action linked to prejudice over camp labor. Italian consul Lionello Sceles vows full report. Italian ambassador to Washington seeks facts. New Orleans acting Consul Papini urges Governor Blanchard to arrest guilty mob members.
In Laurel Mississippi a public street duel left Edward Bragg dead and ex state senator B W Scarborough wounded. A quarrel over a local matter led Bragg to urge Scarborough to obtain a gun. Scarborough bought a shotgun and shells, returned and Bragg fired three times mortally wounding him. A nearby boy spectator was lightly injured.
Pensacola Florida December 16 United States Senator Stephen Mallory announces he will not seek reelection due to health decline. He has served four Florida House terms, two in Congress, and two as senator. The news follows a prior pledge to run for a third term before his condition worsened.
Senator Tillman pressed for stronger financial measures, interrogating treasury policy and Wall Street influence. He urged more circulation money to aid farmers, criticized relief authority, and mocked clearinghouse certificates as shinplasters while praising the comptroller of the currency but demanding firmer enforcement and liquidity actions.
