Ten crewmen were rescued by the coaster Judge Pennewill which is en route to New York from Charleston. Will Estadyek Free Ferry Huntsville Alabama December 9 Special The establishment of a free ferry to cross the Fennessie river at Whitesburg is being agitated as a means to extend Huntsville trade into Morgan and Marshall counties south of the river. The Whitesburg ferry charges are said to be exorbitant and a free crossing could lift cotton receipts from that section by at least 1,000 bales annually.
Goldfield Nev December 9 The Goldfield mines will reopen Thursday with wage cuts and a ban on Western Federation of Miners workers. Troops to guard the camps while 500 replacement workers are brought in. Friction erupts on Main Street as a miner clashed with a soldier and bystanders restrained threats. Officials deny importing many non union workers, relying on federation members to withdraw if needed. Rumors swirl as the town braces for new labour tension.
Canton Georgia December 6 Special The county board of education orders a special examination of applicants to teach in Cherokee in 1908 to be held at Canton on Saturday December 21. The test for 1908 is fixed the same as 1907 for January February March July and August. The average attendance of pupils this year is about 89 percent of the census of 1603 and about 70 percent enrollment. Commissioner Perry aims to improve interest across the communities to better the 1908 showing. In 1907 public funds apportioned Cherokee were not fully used during the January February March July and August term. an extra month was added and many county schools are in session in December.
