Legislature votes down effort to move state election date
The General Judiciary Committee reported favorably on a summer session bill by Senator Skelton but adopted an adverse stance on consolidating state and national elections, voting 14 to 7 for summer sessions and 11 to 8 against changing the state election to Tuesday after the first Monday in November. Debate cited savings of about $26,000 and concerns over governor timing, with supporters arguing practical benefits for farmers and attendance, while opponents warned of risks to party stability and constitutional limits. Judge Akin pressed Skelton on Governor timing. Felder and Hall warned of risks of unrest or constitutional issues. The panel then moved to report the summer sessions bill favorably and defeat the consolidation bill.
