Guthrie Ohio Aug 4 A proposed Pan American Railroad Company with capital of 250 million dollars files articles of incorporation. The plan envisions a trunk line from Hudson Bay to Buenos Aires with branches to Peru Brazil and Chile and a second Peru to Rio de Janeiro branch. Estimated total cost 250 million to 760 million and length 10 600 miles. Incorporators include W H Y Wedge Stephen A Sheldon W J Pendleton and others.
A blaze in a four story Budapest building on August 23 10 pm trapped two hundred workers in a lower floor warehouse and residents on upper floors. Floods of escaping sheets saved some but many jumped to death or were injured as flames spread rapidly. total deaths range widely with extensive property damage mostly insured.
Chicago financier H. Kohlssah (Kohlsaat) visits President Roosevelt at Sagamore Hill Oyster Bay. He states he would not accept any office and the cabinet will stay intact. He discusses proposed financial legislation, noting broad interest and regional differences, urging concise remedial measures.
Major Charles H. Smith known as Bill Arp died after gall bladder surgery and a protracted illness. His family and several relatives are at his bedside in Carteraville. Funeral arrangements are reported for a time tonight at 8.30.
Former Senator Butler of South Carolina says Secretary Wilson defends gamblers who manipulate cotton prices. Wilson hopes prices stay high until growers sell. Butler says growers owe much to Brown and Hayne, while warning that a price drop before new crop is ready would force him to honor his stance against manipulation.
An attack in Brewton Alabama involved a Black farm hand named Tom Fifer attempting to poison the Crossley family with a strychnine laced water bucket. Mrs Crossley and a daughter drank the substance. she died while the daughter survived. Fifer escaped after striking Matthew Crossley with a rock. Authorities promise pursuit and the community expresses outrage.
