Dispatches from St Petersburg and Sofia report Turkish garrison losses and insurgent advances across eastern Thrace. Russian forces recall to Sevastopol after pressuring the sultan, while Belgians are urged to nominate officers for Turkish gendarmes. Rebels burn villages, disrupt telegraph lines, and push toward Salonica and Monastir as Ferid Pasha plans inspections and dispatches battalions to Macedonia.
St. Petersburg dispatch says the Porte condemns and punishes murderers of Hostkowski, dismisses officers who insulted Rostkowski, searches for attackers on the consul’s carriage, removes 24 officials named by the Russian ambassador, frees those accused of outrages, reprimands Hussein Hilmi, restores Ismal Baki Pasha to Palanka, and orders gendarmerie changes plus strict orders to all military civil and judicial authorities to restore order and tranquility.

A circus train wreck in Brunswick Missouri on August 2 killed one man and severely burned four others as escaping steam scalded sleepers in bunks above ponies. six trick ponies died. Raleigh August 23 The state convention of tobacco growers at Rocky Mount commends the stand against the tobacco trust and reports sympathy from South Carolina Virginia Tennessee and Kentucky The plan calls for local stock companies to buy store and manufacture tobacco with shares set at five dollars to help small farmers gain control Secretary of State Grimes a major grower attended with about 1500 growers present
Governor Aycock travels to Asheville to review the First regiment and the First battery of the North Carolina National Guard. Attendance at the encampment is record high. Brigadier General Burk from Madison Barracks is invited as guest. Troops expect five days in camp this year, with plans for ten days next year. A separate report notes a sympathetic strike by marine machinists in New York, risking shipyard tie ups if wages rise.
Wince Wall, a young white man from Columbus, was arrested by local police for the Russell County Alabama sheriff. He is wanted on charges of assault and battery and using profanity in the presence of others.
In McKeesport Pennsylvania on August 2 a man named Mike Hornsk attempted to force entry into the home of Benjamin Schwarts a noted wholesale fruit dealer. Schwarts shot and killed the intruder during the break in authorities reported no further details at this time.
Ban Francisco reports the death of Count Van der Valde an aristocrat from Holland found dead on Ocean Boulevard this afternoon. He was about 40 years old and died likely from heart disease after medieval treatment. Once heir to 2000, he sought fortune in Alabama colonization schemes Australia mining ventures and varied jobs after arriving in San Francisco as a sailor.
New York August 2 Mrs Mary Kleeburg wife of Philip Kleeburg a lace merchant killed herself at Riverside Drive home by swallowing carbolic acid after hosting a dinner for relatives and friends. The couple had returned from a drive and she was found dying shortly after. No reason was given for the act.
A large fire in Beaumont Texas last night gutted the Santa Fe railroad round house and machine shops. Five locomotives and machinery valued at about 100000 dollars were destroyed. The total loss is estimated at 100000 dollars and the cause is unknown.
New York August 2 Charles M Schwab with CTE Matthieson now in control of the Chicago Pneumatic Tool Company. Schwab and associates acquired Max Pam and allies holdings, paying $800,000 par value stock at 70 dollars a share.
A large gathering of Macedonian sympathizers at Hull House in Chicago denounced the sultan's government. They drafted resolutions to be sent to President Roosevelt urging a note to European powers expressing indignation and horror over recent Macedonian events and urging intervention for humanity.
Lieutenant Commander Francis Davenport United States Navy retired died here in Detroit on August 23 of heart failure. A 1880 graduate and former classmate of Admiral Schley, he served on several vessels during the Spanish American War and retired in 1870 at his own request. He lost his right arm in an accidental pistol discharge during a cutting out expedition in Texas. Davenport later worked in the local insurance business for years.

Major Charles H. Smith known as Bill Arp has grown weaker since yesterday in Cartersville Georgia. Doctors say he lacks strength to rally though his vitality may prolong the end. An immediate crisis is not yet evident.
A seven year old girl in Creston Iowa died after swallowing peas whole ten days earlier. Doctors diagnosed dysentery but autopsy found peas sprouted in her stomach. The case highlights unsafe child feeding and accidental ingestion.

Charles Carroll Bonney, once president of the World Congress at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, died after a three year illness. Born in New York state seventy two years ago, he was a noted lawyer, teacher, author and orator who helped lead the law and order movement and presided over the Rutting League for many years. In Rawlins August 2, Union Pacific settled with estates of forty one miners killed in the Hanna explosion of June, paying 40 to each widow, 3 to each child, and 4 to each single man.
