Congressman Livingston edges Schley Howard by a small margin while Alexander is defeated. Fulton County results show Smith winning by 563 votes in an apparent local or regional race.
In a tight party primary election the contest for Georgia governor led to miscast and discarded votes due to rule misinterpretations. Hoke Smith Brown Walker splits show Brown carrying Fulton County and Smith winning several wards. Early results favored Smith in key wards while Brown led in others. Livingston wins county in the Fifth District race. Continued on Page Two.
William Schley Howard secured sixteen votes in the fifth district convention while Livingston carried Fulton and Newton counties by small margins. Delegates will be chosen Thursday as the contest ends in Atlanta with Howard set to take his seat in the sixtieth second Congress beginning March 4, 1911.
Felder of Bibb led in the attorney general contest while Anderson surged to second as sixth ward returns shifted the race. In Fulton county local races General Clifford L. Anderson and Tull C. Waters won decisive positions with Waters carrying the ticket and Anderson prevailing by about 316 votes over Frank Wilby. Twelve candidate contests created heated, noisy campaigning before early morning results shown wide margins in county totals.
The returns show Mr Felder s elected by a safe margin and carrying Fulton by a large majority. Mall had held office since July 15 after succeeding Hickey in the wake of Attorney General Hart’s restructuring. Felder has long been active in state politics and chaired the 1907-8 senate committee investigating abuses in the convict system.
General Thomas T. Mumford of Lynchburg appointed chairman of the history committee for the Grand Camp of Confederate Veterans of Virginia to fill the vacancy caused by Senator Darel's death in Richmond.
Norfolk dispatch reports Virginia Democrats nominate William A. Young for Congress in the second district over incumbent Harry L. Maynard. With two precincts counted, results suggest Young’s victory, securing party nomination and likely election in November despite past GOP opposition on civil rights issues.
Cleveland, August 2. One man is dying and two girls hurt as two automobiles with toy riders crash near the intersection of What Sixth street and Supplier avenue just after 1 am. Both cars were speeding and the crash shattered them. Edward Z. McGuire, chauffeur of one car, identified. Ten passengers were aboard both cars, five escaped with minor injuries.
Fulton county voters backed a move to replace fee-based pay with salaries for county officers. Dr. George Brown Walter McIlreath and George Westmoreland led the race for the delegation with Alexander decisively defeated. Westmoreland led with 7 326 votes McIlreath 8 744 Brown 6 537. The primary results show strong support for salary reform and aim to curb officer pay through fees. Alexander’s opposition to the Atlanta constitution amendment is cited as a factor in his loss.
Charles Town West Virginia August 23 R C Ringgold his wife and several friends riding in an automobile from Shepherdstown to Charles Town narrowly escaped death by leaping from the car when a Baltimore and Ohio passenger train dashed around a curve and came upon them without warning. None of the party was injured.
Govor Smith, reached by phone at midnight, asserted he would secure 280 convention votes, or 40 more than a majority, from advance returns. He cautioned the figure was not final and said he would issue a fuller statement when complete results arrive today.
Governor Joseph M Brown said the statewide vote remained too close to call and would not comment until returns were consolidated. He told a Constitution representative near midnight that advice from across the state indicated a very close vote and that counties yet to report held the key to the outcome.
Fulton county voters chose Wheeler Mangum to continue as sheriff praising his handling of the office over the past two years in an election outcome reported by the local press.
Weather outlook notes partly cloudy conditions in the southern portion. On Thursday showers are expected with light to moderate intensity, winds from the southeast, and variability in conditions potential. High temperatures around 76 degrees expected.
Hon Hoke Smith was yesterday nominated for governor of Georgia for a second term defeating Governor Joseph M Brown. Returns indicate Smith with a majority of at least 3 percent, with 81 counties for Smith and 1 for Brown. Consolidated results awaited to confirm exact margin.
