City lays off fifteen asphalt workers until funds found

Fifteen men in the city asphalt repair gang were laid off Friday due to exhausted funds for continued work. The construction department reported the asphalt repair fund is depleted even as the streets are in bad condition. City officials hoped property owners would cooperate in resurfacing with Lutz heaters, but few consented. Recent work on Gilmer Street between Ivy Street and Courtland Avenue cost 70 cents per yard. The old Belgian block base proved strong for the asphalt and the department says the Lutz-heated pavement is nearly as good as new for about $3 per square yard.
