George Walker a well known Atlanta railroad man died after a six month illness at age 47. He served as Atlanta joint terminals agent for eleven years after twenty years with the Nashville Chattanooga and St Louis railroad in Atlanta. He was active in civic life and Masonry and survived by his wife four daughters four sons and three brothers. Funeral plans expected for Sunday.
Madison Ga August 13 Special The funeral of Floyd Foster who was shot early Thursday morning occurred at his father Judge F C Foster home at two oclock this afternoon The interment was at the Fosters burial The killer Nick Johnson is still at large but local and state authorities have been notified Madison citizens held meetings to discuss rewards and capture efforts The governor was asked to offer a state reward while a second meeting was planned to adopt measures to apprehend the slayer Johnson is believed to be hiding along the Oconee river swamp near the Morgan Fulham line south of Swords and is being hunted in five counties authorities from Atlanta Macon Augusta and nearby counties are on alert The deceased was popular and his death has stirred strong public demand for justice
Dr Joe Broughton was elected permanent chairman of the recall campaign committee with James V Hangwell as vice chairman at the first meeting. Representatives from all ten wards attended and speeches attacked the police commission for demoting Chief James L. Beavers. Petitioners signed in good faith, with 25 percent of the registration list needed within ten days. A series of mass meetings will be held next week, starting on the West End, to mobilize veterans and other voters. Some local professionals have signed petitions and offered time and money to push the effort.
London August 23 George Joseph Smith the wife murderer was hanged today at Maidstone. Smith was found guilty by a jury on July 1 and accused of murdering three wives to collect life insurance. Each victim was found drowned in a bathtub after the wedding. After sentencing the court complimented the jury and noted he had married two other women and robbed them of large sums.
A bill was advanced to expropriate land for a cemetery to bury Allied dead from the Entente in France. The proposal came from War Minister Millerand and deputies supported the measure today.
South Bend police arrested former Dunkard minister Silas VY Ebberagle yesterday on suspicion of murdering 11 year old Howel Macklin last October. A canvas telescope and a bag found in a vacant house linked to Ebberagle are central to the investigation. Ebberagle is jailed pending further inquiry.
Washington August 18 The American appeal to Mexicans to cease fighting and join a movement to restore constitutional government begins, with the document dispatched in English to Mexico City for translation and delivery to military leaders. Carranza may yield. Villa asserts readiness to join in the common welfare as border plans unfold.
Lord Robert Cecil, under secretary for foreign affairs, stated Britain will use all lawful means to prevent cotton reaching Germany and Austria. He signaled that if cotton is made contraband, the act would be legally justified, while aiming not to injure neutrals or disrupt American cotton producers.
In Galveston area bankers from Texas to Georgia met to discuss forming a permanent southern bankers association aimed at gradually marketing the cotton crop and boosting prices. Platshure NY August 13 residents Wilson will review about a thousand amateur soldiers marching at the military camp of instruction led by General Leonid Wood. Invitations to visit the camp went to former President Roosevelt and others. If the event proceeds, the troops will be taken to New York for the Labor Day parade and will display equipment at Governors Island barracks. The scene was described as the most impressive display seen by officers tonight.
The body of Walter Simmerman, a lumber mill owner, was found in woods near Concomia Parish, Louisiana, 39 miles away. An employee led investigators to the scene. The top of his head had been blown off by a shot from his own gun, with another gunshot wound in the chest. Authorities suspect homicide. Simmerman had recently moved from Daniel, YORI.
London reports from Copenhagen that the Danish government will impose a 40 percent tax on surplus profits of shipping firms still solvent after wartime disruption. Officials estimate the levy could raise about $6.5 million, easing the national debt and funding postwar needs.
