Slow progress on tariff revision in Washington
Democrats moved slowly on the new tariff bill as an opposing speech by Senator Warren and a sharp debate between Senators Stone and Lippitt dominated the day. Senator Sherman attacked the 15 percent rate on car wheels, labeling the outcome as aiding British and German manufacturers. He cited little China trade for 1914 and 1913, mocking the era as grape juice diplomacy. Senator Stone questioned sources for the cotton schedule, recalling a 1909 Dolliver charge about cotton interests. Senator Lippitt retorted the Democrats behaved like cuttlefish and warned of attempts to discredit him. Warren warned the agricultural schedule would burden farmers, arguing world competition with cheap labor.
