Sulzer Plunged On Funds For New York Campaign
New York August 8 governor William Sulzer faced nearly 60 000 in debt from stock market speculation at his nomination. Hearings of the Frawley committee exposed campaign fund use to buy stock, with deposits from several firms and one staff member preventing sale. Evidence suggests possible impeachment under the corrupt practices act.

Death of Senator Johnston Reverberates in Tariff Fight
By John Carrigan Jr. Washington August special. The death of Senator Johnston of Alabama complicates the selection of his successor and the fate of the Underwood-Simmons tariff bill. The seventeenth amendment creates a vacancy procedure, but Alabama’s legislature has not authorized a temporary appointment or election. Governor ONeal faces limits, and the legislature’s inaction leaves the governor with few moves. The loss shifts Senate votes, creating a dangerous margin for the tariff bill as Democrats hold a slim majority and several key Republicans and independents loom as undecided. Prospective candidates for the Alabama seat include Hobson Heflin and Clayton. Underwood’s friends consider him but he declines immediate declarations, noting he cannot seek the unexpired term. Johnston’s death robs the Democratic side of a vote, and colleagues express deep regret. Continued on Page Seven.
