New Orleans, August 4 report to 6 pm shows 43 new cases, 475 total, 86 deaths, 56 sub-foci. Citizens urge federal control to wipe out yellow fever, with Surgeon General and officials considering entrusting government in charge and sending a relief mission to restore confidence.
A Louisiana and Mississippi standoff near Lake Borgne canal ends with the Grace and the Tipsey seized by Mississippi guards and crews jailed in St Bernard parish. Reports say later Grace released after papers from Captain Chaytor were shown.
Secretary Taft and party arrived in Manila aboard the steamer Manchuria at 10 this morning. Governor General Wright Major General Corbin and Rear Admiral Train greeted them as salutes sounded. The party proceeded to the governor general’s residence for an official welcome and the presentation of the golden keys of the city amid a thronged, festively decorated street scene.
President Roosevelt sent a telegram to Surgeon General Wyman directing federal action to handle the yellow fever situation in New Orleans. Governor Blanchard of Louisiana urged U S government takeover, with plans to report back and consult with the Navy and Army surgeons. Dr Wyman will confer with Secretary Shaw and prepare a full report.
Bibb County Sheriff George Robertson arrested Epp Adams for the killing of James Jenkins, last Sunday night six miles east of Macon. Adams was captured at Pound Duk and brought to Macon under warrant for a hearing. Adams is jailed awaiting further action with no statement given.
Henry W. Manser, condemned to die in the electric chair on September 10 for murder, accepted his sentence today and asked his attorney not to appeal to the court of appeals.
August 4 final arrangements completed for President Roosevelt to welcome Russian and Japanese peace envoys tomorrow. Greeting by the president, state and navy departments to aid their mission, buffet luncheon to avoid formal seating, about twenty five guests. Envoys travel by separate boats to Portsmouth for the peace conference, Mayflower and Dolphin linking the party, Galveston to convoy. Witte and Rosen hosted at Sagamore Hill, Witte praising Roosevelt and the U.S. leadership. Russians fear Monday opening of the conference. credentials and formalities due two days. The National Association of Stationary Engineers elected officers in Louisville with R D Tomlinson as president Theodore N Kesley as vice president F W Raven as secretary and Hugh Rensford as treasurer The next convention will be in Philadelphia Cincinnati note. Also a trial update reports John Smith denied a new trial in the murder case at Sycamore with ongoing Irwin superior court proceedings through next week. Rome Ga August 4 a juror's mother died forcing Judge Wright to pause deliberations. The Brandon juror attended the funeral and the panel will resume work. Throughout the day speculation swirled on verdicts while rumors of a hung or high charge circulated among observers. Colonel Copeland delivered the closing argument as crowds gathered at the courthouse.
Rome Ga August 4 Special after serious meditation I feel that my adviser has done me an injustice and I will admit that portions of divorce pleadings published by Frank Copeland were untrue and published without my knowledge or consent I will not have future relations with him as adviser and request Colonel Linton A Dean be retained Mrs Elizabeth Sanford statement provided by Jordan Sanford and R E Davison says she wants publication of the request and mentions James K Sanford bringing Dean to her for retention Colonel Copeland declined to comment
In Cleveland Ohio on August 4 Referee Remington reviewed fee claims for Mrs. Chadwick’s receiver Nathan Loeser and lawyers Dawley Kerrush and Thompson. Loeser claimed 2500 dollars. referee called it exorbitant and many items unallowable, with further itemization to be considered later.
In Columbus Ga on August 3 Blanchard F. McGee aged 28 died by self inflicted gunshot at his home. His body was laid to rest in Chipley with no clear motive found. He leaves a wife Leila Hardy, children, parents Mr and Mrs W F McGee, two sisters and a brother. He had been in good business standing with Columbus Paper Co. and there was no known reason for the act. Additional notes report the Brown House in Macon sold to Bartow Stubbs with Newton J Ethridge as promoters and management to remain, hotel valued over 500000. Augustus Dupree of Powder Springs died after being struck from a freight car by a northbound passenger train near Rockmart, and died in Chattanooga.
Washington August 4 Acting Secretary of the Interior Ryan orders an end to applications for tribal school maintenance in Indian Territory by March 4 next. The move follows a request from the Indian affairs commissioner on contract lengths with Choctaw boarding school superintendents. New York August 7 In the city Sergius Witte the Russian peace envoy arrives as Jewish delegates press for a clearer statement on Jewish concerns amid tensions. Chicago notes an appeal by Hine Brine over consular matters in Send.
