Debts and motives tied to Van Riper Peckham and others in government service are hinted to surface if the box's contents are disclosed.
In Ooster Ohio a divorce hearing over Captain Taggart’s marriage opens with Judge Easom granting temporary shared custody. Howard Taggart testifies to visits with Lieutenant Rither and a note alleging infidelity, while describing Mrs Taggart’s habit of drinking whiskey straight and the captain’s stance on beer for their sons.

Bazley Ga August 8 Mike Aspenwall city marshal Baxley was assassinated today by A J Chestnut. Chestnut was chased by twenty five armed citizens from businesses. He fired at pursuers, was shot in the left side with a Frith ball, and killed. Chestnut had a street fight earlier with Lake White. City Marshal Rapinwell intervened.
Leadsville Arkansas Aug 3 after killing two persons seriously wounding two others one a woman Ike Kinney a desperado negro was killed in a river bottom near Daeta six miles south of Leadsville at noon after a hot fight with a white posse. His bloody record for August 1 2 and 3 shows multiple killings and the assault on Mr and Mrs Stewart of Greensboro Texas. A posse pursued Kinney and a fierce exchange left Nash with a finger shot off and Barham shot through the neck. The body and posse returned to Stamps on a special train with a reward of fifteen hundred dollars for Kinney dead or alive. West Point Georgia Aug 3 quarantine against Louisiana Mississippi to prevent yellow fever spread.
The Carnegie Institution's department of international research in terrestrial magnetism plans a magnetic survey of the northern Pacific from San Francisco. The brig Galilee, adapted for the expedition, will sail late in the week with Dr. L. A. Bauer directing the project and J. F. Pratt leading the scientific team.
