Pro German Telegrams Deluge Senators Protest War
Washington reports twenty five thousand telegrams protested any move toward war with Germany aimed at Senators Sherman and Lewis of Illinois. Messages signed by individuals and prepaid arrived in packages of one hundred with no sign of who prepared the forms. Similar telegram campaigns targeted Cummins and Kenyon from Iowa and LaFollette and Husting from Wisconsin, with Missouri Senator Stone also flooded. The effort is billed as a peace campaign funded by American groups and German American funds, not a German-led drive.
