Shanghai reports a collision between the steamer Hsin Yu and the cruiser Hai Yung in thick fog south of the Chasan islands. More than a thousand soldiers and crew were lost. only thirty saved. The general headquarters of the Southern Railway in Washington burned tonight, destroying many records though vaults saved the most valuable. The $200,000 loss covered the six story brick building on Pennsylvania Avenue. three telegraph operators and a watchman escaped unharmed while fireman Walter Snyder was seriously injured. Dispatch work halted as emergency plans were set to handle the situation and assess the steel annex damage still unknown.
