Hsin Yu Sinks After Fog Collision Off Chasan Islands

Shanghai reports a collision between the steamer Hsin Yu and the cruiser Hai Yung in thick fog south of the Chasan islands. More than a thousand soldiers and crew were lost. only thirty saved. The 1628 ton Hsin Yu carried troops to Foo Chow, owned by China Merchants Steam Navigation Co. of Shanghai.

Southern offices destroyed by fire in Washington

The general headquarters of the Southern Railway in Washington burned tonight, destroying many records though vaults saved the most valuable. The $200,000 loss covered the six story brick building on Pennsylvania Avenue. three telegraph operators and a watchman escaped unharmed while fireman Walter Snyder was seriously injured. Dispatch work halted as emergency plans were set to handle the situation and assess the steel annex damage still unknown.

Knights of Columbus Meet in New Orleans

New Orleans April 23 Province and district assemblies of the Knights of Columbus from fourteen southern states and the isthmus of Panama opened their first biennial convention here tonight. Delegates attended services at St Josephs church where high mass was celebrated and a sermon delivered by Very Rev Francis X McCabe president of DePaul University Chicago. A banquet and reception followed for the assemblies officers.
