Southern Express and railroads prep for a rise in individual whisky shipments into Atlanta after the new prohibition law. Southern Express leases 46 48 West Hunter Street for whisky handling with in person delivery only. Railroads file liquor shipment rules and affidavit forms with the state railroad commission to govern delivery and reporting.
Berne April 21 report states the French government allowed two thousand carloads of American corn bound for Switzerland, after weeks delayed in Marseilles. Forwarding has begun. Britain offered four steamers, Greece offered ships, and a Swiss merchant marine plan was dropped due to lack of naval protection.
Amsterdam April 21 The Lokal Anzeiger of Berlin publishes an interview with Dr von Lentze Prussian finance minister who forecasts great financial difficulties for the German empire and its states He suggests direct taxes on states may be needed despite constitutional limits The war's prolongation forces this hard reality to be acknowledged by the government and public in Berlin
Peoria Ill April 21 Medill McCormick as temporary chairman of the republican state convention criticized President Wilson's foreign policy saying Americans might almost hear across the Rio Grande the snigger at our futile admonitions He added that Great Britain and Germany received the presidents communications with unconcealed disdain The president notes to Germany were pardoned by the president s course in Mexico The convention nominated Senator Sherman for president.
Washington April 21 T Coleman Du Pont candidate for the republican nomination announced he would leave New York May 3 on a speech making trip across the continent stopping at all principal cities en route and reach Chicago on his return days before the republican convention. He runs on a business methods ticket.

John Harrison Surratt, last survivor of alleged Lincoln assassination conspirators, died in Baltimore at 72. Former general freight agent of the Baltimore Steam Packet Co, he served in the Confederate secret service during the Civil War and fled from New York to Canada then Europe, Egypt and South America before being brought back for trial.
Washington reports indicate the Justice Department will seek additional indictments of German sympathizers after Horst von der Goltz alleged spy disclosures. Officials say the probe widens beyond the five New York associates already linked to plans to blow up the Welland Canal and may extend to other activities.
Peoria holds that control of the Illinois Republican organization shifted today as a new coalition led by Senator Sherman Frank Lowden and Mayor Thompson of Chicago took over. The convention backed Sherman for president and named 29 presidential electors, adjourning to reconvene in Peoria on September 19 to nominate three university trustees and adopt a party platform.
Boston April 21 Submarine L-3 one of the largest in the navy was formally delivered to the government by Fore River Shipbuilding Corporation at Charlestown navy yard and placed in commission immediately The seven vessels of this class will be in service by July 1 with a cruising radius of 5500 miles each.
Washington April 21 The senate judiciary committee studied the Louis D Brandeis Supreme Court nomination for two hours but did not vote. The nomination will be taken up again Monday.
New York April 21 recruits who wished to go to the front may do so at once the Army announced. Since regulars entered Mexico the number of applicants at the recruiting station has been rising rapidly.
An April 21 powder department explosion at a Bordeaux grenade factory killed twenty workers and injured several others. Firefighters battled flames as authorities began investigations into the blast.
Governor Harris formally offered Judge Robert Hodges the seat on the state court of appeals to replace Judge Richard B. Russell. Hodges accepted after Russell declined to withdraw his resignation, effective June 5, as the governor weighs next steps and potential Macon court appointments.

Washington, April 21. The House rejected a Lever amendment to add 175000 to the annual agricultural appropriation bill for potash research and Pacific coast kelp factory experiments. The chair sustained a point of order that potash is not an agricultural product, keeping the usual 35000 for fertilizer ingredient investigations in the measure.
Tulsa April 2 Harry Sinclair, multimillionaire, announced creation of a $50,000,000 oil producing and refining firm to be headquartered in Tulsa. He denied plans to compete with Standard Oil and said the company would operate without bias toward existing refiners.
Alexandria April 21 a lone bandit robbed the express safe and mail pouches on the Louisiana Railway and Navigation passenger train arriving early today at Manaurs about 30 miles south. Express messenger Phillips said about £350 was taken and he received head wounds from the robber who leaped from the train. Police reported a man matching the robber’s description near Manaura station last night with no trace found by noon.
Washington on April 21 the department of agriculture issued a statement noting that much of the 1915 apple crop remains unsold and the apple market is in grave condition. Thirty three percent of apples placed in cold storage by December 1 1918 are still awaiting consumption. A backward spring could trigger release of the rest.
