A midnight blaze in the Hotel Dalton in Dalton Georgia destroyed the four story hotel and neighboring buildings. Firefighters fought for hours as water pressure failed and guests fled across two blocks. The Showalter printing plant and several stores were lost, with extensive damage to the Dalton Opera House and Masonic Temple. one guest suffered injuries from a jump to safety.
In Lowndes County Alabama a deadly explosion at Banner mine trapped about 18 men at 1 am. Afterdamp hampered rescue as officials say most victims were convicts and likely dead. Rescue attempts continue as a care arrives to supply brattice and air.
Cleveland Ohio April 8 a report says former mayor Tom J Johnson is near death in a semi conscious state with extremely weak health. A civic reformer and advocate of municipal ownership and a 3 cent streetcar fare he rose to national prominence during his tenure as Cleveland mayor and earlier service in congress. He was born in Georgetown Kentucky in 1854 and began work on street railway improvements that shaped his fortune.
