Chicago April 8 After causing the arrest of Frank ONeill on a charge of failure to support her his wife signed a fin bond in Englewood court as a guarantee that he will hereafter support her The judge warned him to change business and comply with the law Retired to send his wife to her parents Also mentions a Standard company refining refined petroleum and a note on petroleum prices
Thomas F Walsh, known as the River Mining King, died at his Washington home at 11 30 tonight from a growth on the lung linked to a past mining injury. Born in Ireland in 1851, he built a fortune in Colorado and Massachusetts Avenue, returning from the South for health. Survived by his wife, daughter, and son in law Edward B McLean, he will be buried beside his only son in Rock Creek Cemetery after a simple Masonic funeral on Sunday. The elder Walsh had long battled tragedy from his son’s fatal auto crash which also hurt his daughter.
Clarence Howlett, arrested in Baltimore, is taken to New York to recover jewels stolen from the home of Rear Admiral Nicol Ludlow, U S Navy retired. The jewels belong to Mrs. Frederick Hughar and were valued at $20,000.
A man named Matthew D. Doss walked into the Twenty-second Street police station in Chicago and confessed he killed his wife with carbolic acid in Washington D C a year earlier. He said a coroner ruled death by his wife's own action and that he had been haunted by the crime.
Postmaster General Hitchcock warns of a cabal seeking to oust him as cabinet tensions rise under President Taft. Secretaries Knox Dickinson Meyer align with opposition, while MacVeagh Ballinger Nagel support Hitchcock. Wheeling West Virginia April 8 A head on collision between two Baltimore and Ohio freight trains at Roneys Point eight miles east of Wheeling results in the death of Engineer Nash and injures four other crewmen. One locomotive toppled into Wheeling creek. the other into a field. Both tracks blocked by debris. Cause cited as a misread order leading to reassignments.
In Passaic New Jersey two teen boxers Trehome Trehon and Keiser aged 19 met for a prize fight with a formal setup. A fatal seventh round followed a body shot to Trehon that left him unconscious and later died in hospital. Frank Kelser named in a warrant as the other principal fled to Canada. Referee Henry Koschstedt was arrested and later released on bail.
Gennua April 8. Colonel Roosevelt and Mrs Roosevelt faced waves of demonstrations as their senatorial pilgrimage paused in Genoa. Civilians hailed the couple with hurrahs and bouquets, forcing a change in route to avoid crowds. The pair, incognito, regretted the exposure and pressed on toward Porto Maurizio to visit Carew Villa, with Pinchot slated to meet them.
Seventeen census enumerators in Clerksburg West Virginia have struck for higher pay. Supervisor Hervey W. Harnter reports the strike as of April third, noting ongoing difficulties in securing strike-breakers and fears that the district’s population may be undercounted in the general census.
