Painter Luther Williams Hangs From Georgia Power Stack
A Decatur crowd watched 22 year old painter Luther Williams dangle from the Georgia Railway and Electric Light stack on Butler Street. After ten minutes of struggle his grip failed and he dropped, dying shortly after at Atlanta Hospital. Witnesses mistook the peril for an April Fool joke as the crowd gathered around the power house scaffold and two ropes supported by hooks melted by heat. Williams, aided by John Miller, had prepared the scaffold to reach about 150 feet from the ground. The incident drew a large crowd and was treated as a dramatic accident with the victim still conscious during the fall.
