Police report a Black man described as a madman attacked two women on Milledge Avenue and struck another near the Methodist Church under electric light. The description matches a similar incident on Wednesday when two women were struck.
A repeated assault by a unidentified black man on Misses Hunnicutt, McMahan, and McLendon prompts a citywide search. Police cordoned streets along Milledge Avenue near the Crawford residence and Hubbard House as residents feared another strike under bright moonlight.
In Clarkesville the jury returned a verdict of not guilty for St. Clair Glover charged with murder. The case ended at eight o clock this morning addressing the long and tense trial. The scene showed pallid faces as the defendant faced the outcome.
County officials approved a 4.04 per thousand levy for 1897 up from 3.94, citing road work costs and new costs for administering misdemeanor convicts. The increase includes road improvements, a new superintendent position, a stockade for prisoners, and other necessities. The State rate is 5.21, with the county share calculated at 77.54 percent.
Mr. L M Fowler has handed the Central hotel to new manager W M McElreath of Douglasville Georgia who arrives with strong recommendations to provide top service. Capt W B Kent of the University football team has arrived and aims to build a winning squad with new student athletes. Coach McCarthy formerly at Brown University will join soon with Manager Mitchell to arrange games including possible match with the University of Virginia.
Dealers in horses and mules in Athens prepare for a strong fall market. W A Jester bought Kentucky stock, J S Cheney will supply Tennessee stock, Holman and Scott plan auction sales, J S Bernstein maintains large supplies, and C W Cooper will offer fine stock when sale time arrives. Atlanta report cites James Brown of Newnan as a possible appointee while Mrs. Longstreet remains in contention. Rumors also name J P Atkinson as assistant librarian though officials deny the claims. Meanwhile Episcopal church construction has begun and will continue to completion.
New York September 9 James R Willard Elmer Dwiggins and Jay Dwiggins of J R Willard & Company bankers and brokers with offices in New York Buffalo Washington Philadelphia and Montreal assigned to James Starbuck with preferences for 20000 to William H Osterhout No statement of the firm’s condition is yet obtainable but liabilities are estimated at 1006000 The firm’s partner Jay Dwiggins is currently traveling in Europe.
Three years after a mad dog bite on J. C. A. Bell's plantation in Warrenton a black man died reportedly from hydrophobia. A separate fight left another man badly bitten. the biting man escaped and showed no illness.
A Whitehall Baptist meeting led by Rev. W. H. Prior of Appalachee concluded successfully with fifteen new members baptized. The pastor Rev. M. S. Weaver was absent, and Prior earned a favorable impression on the congregation.

Walter Griffeth of Oconee county lost his coat with sixty dollars in a pocket while resting on his bicycle near Watkinsville. He alerted officers who used bloodhounds but could not identify or locate the thief.

In Macon Georgia Sept 9 Mayor Price offered a reward of 250 dollars for the arrest and conviction of the unknown assailant of Miss Sallie Chapman. The crime has the town stirred and efforts to capture the guilty party are intensified. A missionary rally is planned by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Christian Church and the Mission Band to observe Co W B M day with a program announced for Sunday evening.

The notice urges sending address to Kilmer Co Binghamton NY and guarantees authenticity of the offer.
Legal advertisements announce a sale of four hundred plus acres in Clarke County Georgia known as Hunnicutt’s Jer faim to settle balances due on various deeds. The Athens Savings Bank, through its attorney T. S. Mell, will execute the sale to clear indebtedness, with quitclaim titles to be provided.
