Hitler Gregory an elderly Black man and his six children fell ill after buying cantaloupes. Dr W B Conway’s urgent care saved them from severe poisoning. The seller’s name is unknown. melons were purchased from a thief's patch warning. The family remained ill but expected to recover.
Emmanuel Episcopal church members push to complete the new edifice. Draymen haul rock as stone masons await supply. roof expected and readiness for use by January 1. Rev Beatty, rector, has won strong vestry support and is driving success.
The new Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter house on Prince Avenue is being fitted up by committee members E. E. Pomeroy Howell Erwin and Harry Hull. The old Barrow house behind a grove will be transformed into an elegant home and ready for occupancy by the university opening next month.
An advertisement extols Dr Kilmer Swamp Root as a remedy for kidney and urinary complaints. It claims urine sediment indicates kidney trouble and promises relief from back pain frequent urination and scalding. The offer includes sample bottle and pamphlet by mail and lists price and supplier details.
Atlanta judge Judge Candler refused a new trial for E G C Flanigan on forty five grounds and the case moves to the supreme court for a final appeal to save the defendant's life. Attorneys for Flanigan prepare to make a last stand.
Clarke county Supt. T. P. Stanley orders elimination of the county’s worst grades. crews will reroute the old Carr hill on Lexington road near Athens city limits and later remove a hill on the Georgia Factory road beyond Thomas Bailey’s property. City funds cover the inner Athens segment. Meanwhile Howell Cobb of Americus was killed instantly by a boiler explosion on his plantation and will be buried in Americus. He was a grandson of General Howell Cobb and had many Athens ties.
Prof Joseph Lustrat of Shorter College will soon join the University of Athens to helm the French and Romance languages department. He has rented a Jackson Street residence and is expected to receive a warm welcome from faculty on arrival and to excel in his duties.
Capt H H Carlton heads editorial management of the Banner yet stays an active member of the Athens bar. He will continue handling legal matters and will keep his law office on the Banner building's second floor, where friends may visit.

Both meetings promise rare interest and full attendance is urged as officials discuss plans for the annual conference’s entertainment this fall.
N B Davis of Puryear’s district, in the city, challenges special Commissioner Byrd’s recent report on Georgia convict camps. He says Byrd exaggerated conditions and invites Gov. Atkinson to visit his home to see how convicts are housed clothed and treated.
Three leading professors from the normal school will aid Augusta Institute teachers. Professor Branson will be in Augusta Monday and Tuesday, Professor Smith will be there Wednesday and Thursday, and Professor Earnest will attend Friday.

H S Perry, in Atlanta, denies reports he intends suicide. He mocks Sheriff Nelms, saying if he lives to die by his own hand he will be the oldest man, noting no record in the Bible of anyone living to such an age.

The Banner reports Athens cotton receipts, a key Georgia market, may reach about 75 000 bales this season up from 60 000 last year and 48 000 in 1895 96. Factors say crop is larger and farmers healthier financially, with better roads aiding trade.

He argued education should shape educational ideals and focus on developing thought power through accurate information, thorough knowledge, and clear understanding. He urged teachers to enable pupils to acquire, not merely receive, and emphasized nature study as key to accuracy, discrimination, concentration, and ethical growth. He urged teachable methods that lead students to teach themselves and warned against overreaching.

In Atlanta on September 2, Charles Leake his wife and four children along with Charles Ferguson Eugene Gramling and Stella Gramling fell ill after eating ice cream. All are seriously affected with Leake in dangerous condition and not expected to recover.
The supreme lodge sets August as the first due special assessment for pre Oct 1 1896 members with $1 plus current rate as of that date. If paying all eight at once, remit to the supreme officer. Members joined after Oct 1 1896 owe no special assessments. Future months listed include August October November 1897 February April May and July 1898. Organizing Deputy Paul Gantert reports six new lodges underway and ten new lodges may add about 6500 members. The order aims to publicize progress and unity.

A young man in Elberton spoke disrespectfully to a church choir member. A citizen committee forced him to sign a statement admitting the insult and gave him his walking papers. He left town and is unlikely to return.
