Athens Humane Society Reorganized At Elks Home

Yesterday afternoon the Athens Humane Society held a well attended meeting at the Elks Home and reorganized with Miss Louise Dubose as President and Mrs. R. M. Wade as Vice President. New officers include T. J. Shackleford as Counsel, Miss Jessie Jackson as Secretary, Miss Annie Linton as Treasurer, and Dr. T. E. J. as Prosecuting Agent. The group voted to press quarterly vehicle inspections and to have a member present during inspections, and to pursue enforcement in mayor’s court of ordinances against mistreatment of animals and improper handling of poultry while in transit. A list of new and prospective members was read.

Annual meeting of Oconee Oil Refining Company in Athens

The Oconee Oil Refining Company held its annual meeting in the city with officers elected for the coming year: J. C. Cooper, president. A. M. Dobbs, vice president. W. McKenzie, secretary. B. S. Dobbs, treasurer. C. C. Cooper was named manager of the Eatonton plant. The company reported a prosperous year, plans to purchase 25 all steel tank cars, and to double refinery capacity, signaling continued urban growth in Athens.

New Chemistry Professor H V Black Arrives at University

Dr H V Black the new adjunct chemistry professor at the University of Georgia arrived in Athens and will begin work on the opening of the institution on the 18th. He is noted as a leading young chemist in the South and is a University graduate returning to his hometown as a faculty member. Narcotics Law Praised by Attorney General Hart Opinion

Attorney General John C. Hart replies to physicians and druggists on narcotic act details. He says the law targets traffickers for money, not legitimate medical need. Physicians may prescribe narcotics for patients under care with proper signed prescriptions and dates. Drug stores may fill these prescriptions when issued in good faith.

Mayor Dorsey to attend convention in Norfolk

The Athens mayor will represent the city at the League of American Municipalities meeting in Norfolk Virginia on the 17th to 19th this month. The council also approved a report condemning Chief Engineer W McKinnon for neglect at the water works and outlined new pumping station rules.

Paul Rucker, a negro trusty on the Atlanta chain gang, visited Mrs. Buchanan to buy lunch on Roswell road. He grabbed her shoulders and insulted her, she fled to the house, returned with a double barrel shotgun and fired, wounding him in the leg. victim expected to recover but lame for life.
