A Banner report praises a planned White Way for Athens city streets. A leading merchant who toured Atlanta’s bright lights calls it the city’s best advertisement and urges citizens to fund the project generously to install the illuminated main business thoroughfares.
Pope Brown Campaign Club formed in Clarke county with about a hundred members. Geo. H. Halms elected president and Walter Mallory secretary. The committee asked Pope Brown headquarters in Atlanta to send Hon. Seaborn Wright of Rome to Athens for an address and invited Mrs. Armour to join Judge Russell and Judge Spencer Atkinson in a pro prohibition discussion.
Special to the Banner Americus Ga Nov 22 Car No 60 Buick of Covington turned turtle one mile from Americus this afternoon when fouled by a passing car. Passengers A B Coogler Fansfield right collar bone badly bruised T C Swann Covington badly bruised internal injuries feared R W Campbell Mansfield and T D Stanton Social Circle badly bruised Both Coogler and Swann rushed to Americas hospital for care.
Prof J C Koch assistant to Prof Strahan of the University of Georgia engineering department joins the Atlanta Constitution round the state tour. He travels in the Constitution car to study southern Georgia roads and meet residents while civil engineering training for road design continues. The sixty five car tour began in Atlanta and reached Americus after 149.3 miles under clear skies.
Savannah officials plan to record speeds for the first 202 miles of the Vanderbilt Cup race in hopes of matching the Santa Monica record of 74.6 mph. The Savannah Automobile Club will time the initial segment as part of the 280 mile Vanderbilt event, while the Grand Prize first 209 miles remain untimed. Practice runs continue daily from 11 to 1:30, watched by thousands.

Athens prepares for a large poultry show December 5 to 7 at DuPree Hall with hundreds of coops and thousands of prize chickens. Gainesville Midland announces a four cent round trip rate, other railways expected to match within a 200 mile radius. Col. E. B. Griggs, H. C. Anderson of Bludwine donate to the promotion fund as committees finalize plans for one of the south’s largest poultry exhibitions.
A touring troupe in the Classic City presents a cheerful carnival with a hidden tragedy. A young pregnant wife and mother, separated from her husband in North Carolina, comes to town with the shows. At the hotel the moment of birth and loss unfolds, relief and charity follow as city officers help the bereaved mother and her family.
A subscriber reports paying $3.30 for a year of Human Life and The Review of Reviews via agent E. C. Crawford, but received no issues. He sent three letters to Cosmopolitan Magazine at 81 Broadway seeking credentials and shipment status, receiving no reply. He notes the agent’s authority card and public concern others may face similar issues.
The primary cost was shared by candidates for mayor and four aldermen. Mayor paid 50, aldermen 15 each, totaling 110. Twenty managers and clerks at 2 dollars daily, with 20 dinners at 50 cents, plus printing, newspaper notices, and rental of polling places, bringing costs to about 75 in total.
Rome Ga Nov 22 mid night an offer of 170 acres of land at Atlanta and 250000 in cash was presented to the State Baptist convention to relocate Mercer University from Macon to Atlanta. Georg e M Brown and F J Cooledge of Atlanta proposed the terms. The Elberton committee had favored Macon 250000 and 25 acres with reverting titles but would have supported Atlanta if offered earlier. The room erupted in a tremendous sensation and the matter was expected to be settled tomorrow night.
The new two story Joseph Brown Whitehead hospital at the Georgia School of Technology opened this week for student patients. It was funded after Thomas Jordan, a Tech student, died and led to a drive by Jordan’s mother and the Georgia Women’s Club. Designed by Prof Frank, the brick building adds modern hospital features and some rooms are already endowed. The move spurs plans to place similar facilities at other state educational institutions.

Gov Slaton convenes Georgia legislature in extra session and calls a special election to fill the governor’s vacancy created by Hoke Smith’s resignation. The proclamation, dated November 20, 1911, directs the election for January 10, 1912 and an extra session on January 24, 1913 to receive returns and declare results.
The Interstate Commerce Commission began hearings in New York to assess whether express company rates are reasonable and just. Officials will examine why tariffs remain secret and how profits are divided with railroads amid expected opposition and a strenuous fight.
Senator Hoke Smith addressed about 2000 listeners at the Stewart county fairgrounds in Lumpkin on educational topics, avoiding state politics. Mrs. Mary Harris Armour spoke to a larger audience in the afternoon. An advertisement promotes L. M. Paints by Longman & Martinez, explaining cost and durability advantages and offering a price list via mail order.
Athens opens a quiet Green Tea Room run by women offering tea coffee chocolate and buns daily. On Saturdays at noon the public is invited with specials on the menu and customers may shop or chat while refreshment is served.
Savannah fans await the Georgia versus Auburn game on November 29. Tickets go on sale at Pinkusohns Broughton and Drayton streets and at Kings on Bull Street with exact seat locations charts. Preparations begin with field work and fencing and boxes for guest accommodations, aiming to double last year’s crowd.
In Spalé Ing superior court Judge Daniel overruled a motion to continue the state case against J J Mangham former treasurer of Boyd Mangham Cotton Mills. A jury was selected by noon. Witnesses Segua J Henry Walker and H M Trus testified on warline entries. Mangham faces three felony cases and several misdemeanors but is being tried for embezzlement at this time. The case draws attention due to defendant prominence and local interest.
