Athletic authorities of Georgia and Tech consider a Memorial Day baseball game next spring in Atlanta. Past objections by the Daughters of the Confederacy centered on the holiday, but both schools seek a morning start to avoid interfering with Memorial Day ceremonies.
Mitt Beard, brought from Oconee County, recants claim of assault on Mrs. G. W. Moore at Brookwood. He says authorities used pistols to force a confession, admitting guilt only under threat. Beard, age about 16, was found with a concealed pistol at the Tower and may face charges if not the sought assailant.
In Valdosta, J. G. Rawlings admits hiring Alf Moore to kill W. L. Carter, says the children were not the target, and claims he warned the supposed killer not to harm them. The city of Athens, with an overdraft over forty thousand dollars last January, expects to nearly wipe it out by next January. Finance Committee led by Capt. McMahan pushed paving accounts toward settlement, about eighteen thousand dollars were due at year start and nearly three quarters have been collected. City Marshal Brooks reports fewer big-book defaulters as back taxes were aggressively collected over ten months, and expenditures were controlled to cut the overdraft, a result the city authorities can be proud of.
The Athens telephony upgrade stalls due to late cable shipments promised last August. New switchboards sit in the Talmadge building on College Avenue awaiting cables before installation, delaying completion from January to February. Current system handles 500 lines. 565 are in use, with 800 expected within two years.
Five American missionaries are believed killed at the Lienchow mission. Victims include Dr. Eleanor Chesnut Mrs C B Machie and child and Mr and Mrs Pearle. A row at Jack Kenney's Hancock avenue home ended with Charlie Derricotte and Jake Williams threatening him with pistols. Kenney swore warrants and had them arrested for pointing a pistol at another.
Dr Isaac Hopkins slipped on a banana peel on Clayton street and fell hard striking his hand, bruising a thumb and splintering the nail. Several other pedestrians have recently fallen on banana peels and suffered injuries prompting a call for caution or legal enforcement.
Delegates are streaming in for the state convention with speakers from missionary departments. Sessions open to the public, invitation extended. The missionary year ended September 30 showed strong growth, with the Centennial Jubilee slated for Pittsburgh in 1909.

The Pensacola blaze hit the residence of Hon. W. A. Blount, a noted University of Georgia alumnus. Mrs. Blount was visiting in the city. Blount lost his law library valued at 22 000 dollars and substantial property. Total loss estimated at 100 000 dollars with limited insurance.
Sheriff J W Wier kept old nails from the Wier place beyond the State Normal School as it was torn down for a new home by John A Fowler. The nails came from walls built by Wier ancestors and are about a century old. Hannah Plant of Little Rock thanks Bucklen's Arnica Salve for relief from long standing sores, praised as a marvelous healer for cats burns and wounds. Stores: H R Palmer Irons and W J Smith & Bro. Then an inquiry asks if the Clarke superior court adjourned term will be presided by Judge Brand.
