Stream-Powered Dam to Create 70 Million Gallon Sedimentation Basin

Athens plans a hydraulic dam using Sandy Creek water to create a 70 million gallon sedimentation basin for the waterworks. The project will pump eight million gallons daily from Sandy Creek above the Oconee, channeling water to the site and washing hillside to form the dam. The pond lies 2,500 feet from the current pumping station, with groundwater-treated water then piped under the river to the existing station for filtration. The city now uses about two million gallons daily, with the new pump run only one day in five, ensuring surplus and clearer water through staged precipitation. The basin can be expanded to triple capacity at modest cost, providing years of supply and better water quality before filtration.
