Tiny Broadway Plot Yields Millions Lease on Prime Corner
Manhattan land once sold for 24 dollars and a drink now commands a 1323 dollar per square foot annual rent for a 31 foot Broadway parcel at Thirty Fourth Street. The triangular site, home to a four story building and a busy cigar shop, will be developed by a candy making firm under a 21 year lease worth 3.5 million dollars in rent and taxes. The owner, Robert B. Smith, bought the strip in 1900 for 387 thousand dollars after immigrating from Russia with five pounds. A competing candy concern offered 10 thousand dollars more per year but the deal closed for the lessee. A Saskatchewan farmer meanwhile reports clay for making firelighters.
