City assessors are at work valuing real estate and expect to finish within a week. So far they report a strong increase in the first and part of the second ward. They anticipate a total assessment around two hundred dollars per property, with owners given ten days to contest higher valuations after the books are turned to the city clerk and treasurer.
Mr. L. H. Johnson, longtime shoe dealer in Athens, has moved to Gainesville to reside. Friends in Athens regret his departure, noting he was a respected citizen with many warm ties in the community. He sold his local shoe business and plans to settle in his old hometown.
The committees on manufactures and new enterprises of Athena Chamber of Commerce met yesterday at Griffith & Welch and Dorasy & Fankenstein offices. They discussed securing several manufacturing enterprises for the city and took proper action. The outlook is encouraging for locating two or three plants here. The committees will stay in close touch with firms and take necessary steps to secure these plants if possible.
The remains of Dr William B Whaley who died in Savannah were interred at Oconee cemetery Athens after a Central road train arrival. Family and many friends met the funeral cortege at the depot and floral tributes honored the deceased. Rev T D Cartledge and Rev J D Mell conducted services with a choir led by J D Mell Livy Quarlton E B Mell.
City fraternal orders discuss erecting a shared home with space for Masons Odd Fellows Red Men Knights of Pythias and Elks. Elks favor a joint building, proposing to offset rents from stores and offices with income from the property. If not joint, several orders may build their own lodges soon.
Dr. W C Mattox, long time Athens dentist, has moved to Dublin Georgia in Laurens County for health reasons. He built a large, profitable practice in Athens and is praised as a skilled dentist and valued citizen. The Banner and local patrons wish him a complete health recovery and continued success in his new posting.
Athens lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks re-elected its entire corps of officers for the forthcoming term. The lodge, with a membership over sixty prominent Athens citizens, continues to add new members weekly and plans to act on several admission applications at the next meeting.
Dr Glenn spoke of Georgia teacher Martha Berry who boards forty boys and funds four teachers, shaping work, self-reliance, and noble service. He praised Mr Peabody of New England who used wealth to aid the poor, funding decent homes and education after Sherman’s March. The talk urged expanding efforts to end ignorance and lift the flooded rural areas.
Daily market bulletin notes Liverpool Middling uplands at 663 bales with 7 000 American bales in receipts. New York Spot 1010 tone firm. Athons Market middling 970 with receipts today 12 000 compared to 17 108 year ago.
Mr Cobb Janpkin reports an insect damaging a rye patch behind Mr Limpkin's Dougherty street residence. Black flies lay thousands of eggs and young flies with developing wings are seen. If this pest spreads, grain crops face unknown losses.
Watkinsville Georgia March 19 Dr and Mrs Marshall H Lane of Atlanta were guests of Mr and Mrs Robert B Harris on Saturday and Sunday. Several locals from Athens and surrounding areas are listed visiting and returning home with updates on travel and illness.
