Authorities fear urgent British troop needs and express hope Britain will respond to the emergency. Italy signals cordial relations to Curzon and Britain.
The house of commons debated the second reading of the agricultural produce bill to mark foreign and colonial meat and register dealers. Liberal Unionist F B Mildmay urged marking American cheese to protect consumers and British growers, citing West End stores selling American beef at home prices.
The old Athens Waterworks Company property will be sold at public auction noon at the courthouse door under an Atlanta federal court fore- closure order in favor of Farmers' Loan and Trust Company. Judge Newman orders sale. J E Van Valkenburg of New York to conduct. A six week advance notice is required in local paper and the New York journals. The sale includes buildings, reservoir, engine house, pumps, pipes and all rights and property. A cash deposit of 2500 must be paid. property to be resold if not met. Members of the Royal Arcanum held an eager city meeting Tuesday night. Committees were appointed to prepare for the Grand Council of the Order convening the first Wednesday in May. Plans include grand entertainments and public exercises for visiting brethren and a grinding barber.
Remains of Ella V Bradford who died in Lexington D C were brought to Athens yesterday afternoon. Friends met the casket at the Seaboard Air Line depot and escorted it to Emmarus Church where Rev. R M W Black officiated. She was laid to rest in Oconee cemetery.
Rumor says ex-Speaker Charles F. Crepe and Secretary Hoke Smith may meet in a Georgia joint debate on the financing question. Both have spoken to Athens audiences, and if true, a series of debates could be arranged to let the public hear these Democrats on a major issue.
Athens reports the death of Rev. S. P. Calloway at his LaGrange home. A prominent Baptist minister and educator he served as editor of the LaGrange Reporter. His son Frank E. Calloway is known in Athens. another son James Calloway studies at the University of Georgia and has returned home for the funeral.
Captain W P Welch died after a sudden heart congestion at his Athens home. The 58 year old Georgia lawyer and former state senator collapsed after a day of health, with his wife and daughter among surviving family. Funeral plans to be announced. interment in Ozone Cemetery. Welch was a longtime Athens civic leader and generous benefactor to church and relief efforts.
Savannah on March 18 reported that the Chatham county Republican convention selected McKinley delegates to the Georgia state convention.
